Just Keep Swimming!

Tawfik Abbasi is a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Copley-Price Family YMCA. A couple years ago, Tawfik fled from the conflict in Syria and moved to the United States. He came alone, with no friends or family and did not know how to speak or understand English.

Having to begin a new life for himself, he was able to go to school, learn English and find a community of support at the YMCA. Tawfik emphasizes the importance of teaching people life-saving swimming skills and building confidence in and around the water.

He enjoys doing what he can to help people and positively contribute to his community. “I love this job. I like to help people learn how to swim,” he says. “It matters. It’s important.” Hear more about Tawfik's story here.
