Human Dignity Award

The YMCA's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Human Dignity Award is annually bestowed upon a person who exemplifies Dr. King's work and character. The inaugural award was given to Rufus DeWitt, the first African-American executive director in our YMCA association who served at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in the 1960s.

Subsequent honorees continue to embody Dr. King's spirit and humanitarian ideals. All nominees are submitted for recognition by their peers and are chosen by a prestigious committee that includes past recipients.

2019 Human Dignity Award Winner: Tariq Khamisa Foundation

We were proud to announce last year's Human Dignity Award Winner, the San Diego-based Tariq Khamisa Foundation (TKF). The foundation was founded in 1995 after Tariq Khamisa, a 20-year-old college student, was killed by 14-year-old gang member Tony Hicks. Hicks was tried as an adult for murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The foundation was born when Tariq’s father, Azim Khamisa, felt the tragedy created victims on both ends of the gun. In an extraordinary act of grace and forgiveness, Azim reached out to Hicks’ grandfather, Ples Felix. The two men came together in the spirit of healing to end youth violence, putting on school assemblies where the two men tell their story. The San Diego Union-Tribune credited the men with embracing the concept of restorative justice before it became a movement. Today the mission of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation is to create safer schools and communities through educating and inspiring children in the restorative principles of accountability, compassion, forgiveness and peacemaking.

The YMCA is honored to have Azim Khamisa and Ples Felix accepting the 2019 Human Dignity Award on behalf of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation, teaching all of us that forgiveness, kindness and love prevails. For more about the foundation, visit: https://tkf.org.
