Job Description

Seeking a dynamic Fitness Director to provide direction, leadership, and oversight of group exercise programs, which cover a variety of formats, including and not limited to land and water classes, as well as mind/body programs at the Southeast and Northwest Branches of the YMCA. These programs include both value-added, which are a part of the membership, and paid-programming classes. Primary job responsibilities include supervising over 30 part-time instructors, and coordinating the hiring, training, onboarding, evaluating, and mentoring of department staff members. The Fitness Director also manages the fiscal responsibilities of the department, achieves the determined financial benchmarks, and works with the organization’s in-house Marketing Department in the promotion of program offerings.

 

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree is required. A degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, or Physical

Education is preferred.

A minimum of three years of direct experience in the field as a Group Exercise Instructor is

required.

A minimum of three years of Group Exercise Administration with supervisory experience preferred.

Possess a National accredited Group Exercise Certification is required.

Possess a National Accredited Yoga Certification is desired.

Possess excellent human relation skills to facilitate positive relationships with members, program

participants, and staff.

Exemplifies a professional image via written and oral communication.

Possess a willingness to embrace and to utilize a variety of technologies integrated in the

Organization including the use of GroupEX PRO, Core Member Management Software, and the

hosting of Zoom related Group exercise classes.

Possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Within 30 days of being hired complete Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne

Pathogen, and other required trainings.

Essential Functions

Establish a high standard of program service delivery to the membership.

Maintain a robust schedule of group exercise classes, including both morning and evening program offerings.

Supervise the Team Lead who coordinates the Mind/Body Program and assists with other duties as assigned.

Must be able to fill-in and serve as a substitute instructor when needed.

Manage all related financial components, including budget development, monitoring of expenses, and achievement of desired financial outcomes.

Assure risk management standards promoting the safety and well-being of staff.

Approve time cards weekly for department staff.

Coordinate the interviewing, hiring, training and onboarding for new staff, and conduct annual evaluations for all staff members in the department.

Facilitate regular staff meetings and in-service training sessions with staff.

Access and evaluate the results of various programs in relation to YMCA purposes and specific goals.

Oversee the registration process of all classes.

Coordinate the purchase and maintenance of equipment used for group exercise classes.

Provide support for other department events; promote volunteerism with department staff.

Implement strategies and programs that reach the inactive market.

Assist with the coordination of the annual Fit Fest, Y for All fundraiser.

Establish annual goals and objectives for the department.

Maintain records and make sure all staff are current with required certifications.

Correspond and answer members’ questions.

Develop and implement a comprehensive staff training protocol for all group exercise staff.

Work with other Program Directors and Staff in coordinating room schedules as it pertains to department classes.

Conduct surveys and program evaluations to assess members and participant satisfaction.

Occasionally speak to community groups regarding YMCA programs and services to promote positive public relations and effective communication.

Establish rapport with both the staff and the membership.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work a 40-hour week with irregular work hours including some evening and weekend

hours.

Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds in weight.

Ability to physically perform group exercise and or group training classes/events as needed.
