Senior Member Experience Director

The YMCA of Rapid City is currently seeking a highly organized, energetic, and team-oriented senior director primarily responsible for a $2.1 million dollar membership, aquatics and wellness operation. The Senior Director will drive the member experience to move members from casual to connected to committed increasing membership and program retention.

Under the guidance and direction of the Executive Director, the Senior Director is responsible for building membership and wellness teams to best deliver a first-class membership experience.

Salary range $50,000+ commensurate with experience, along with excellent benefits including health, dental, vision & life insurance, facility usage, before and after school child care, generous paid time off and YMCA-paid retirement upon eligibility. Pre-employment drug test and background screen required.



  • Bachelors Degree in related field or 3 years of equivalent/applicable experience
  • Three years progressive experience in health and fitness management which includes program development, member retention and staff development, including a minimum of two years of staff supervisory experience.
  • Current and demonstrable knowledge of trends in health and fitness, exercise motivation and adherence, and customer service skills necessary to create a motivating environment for customers and staff.
  • Demonstrated competencies in the areas of staff development, relationship building skills, communication skills, conflict resolution, and resource development.
Essential Functions

Position responsibilities include directing all aspects of membership including:

  • Analyzing membership data and statistics to identify trends and make proactive decisions to drive membership
  • Recruiting of new members and retention of existing members through building "value proposition"
  • Strategic planning and implementation of new practices and procedures for achieving strategic membership and wellness goals
  • Building and leading a cohesive membership, aquatics and wellness team
  • Developing and growing community partnerships. Analyzing community demographics to provide innovative programming that serves the community and identifing local marketing opportunities unique to the area.
  • Coordinating all marketing and PR efforts with marketing staff and the Executive Director.

Position Responsibilities Related To Wellness Include:

  • Delivering a quality wellness experience for members by analyzing trends, assist in planning and creating new and innovative adult, youth and family programs that meet the needs of the community and the priority objectives and strategic plan.
  • Researching and implementing quality fitness and group exercise programs that build member retention and provide member satisfaction
  • Working closely with the Executive Director to deliver association-wide initiatives
  • Assisting in outreach in the local community; and mission advancement of the YMCA of Rapid City by initiating expansion in immediate plans to open a new facility.

This exempt position supervises the Membership Director, the Aguatics Director, and the Wellness Director. Other general duties include working as a member of the Y leadership team; developing and maintaining a culture of excellence; fiscal management, mission-related activities including fundraising and increasing awareness; and assisting with special events and projects as assigned.

Strong candidates will have proven skills in staff leadership and supervision; membership, aquatics and wellness program development and delivery; budget management; and relationship building. Other qualifications include strong organizational skills and excellent oral and written communication. This leadership position works interdependently with a high-performing team, under general direction, and is expected to determine how best to accomplish tasks within the guidelines of association strategic plans.
