The newly built Perkins Family YMCA is located in the quaint town of St. Michaels, Maryland and is part of an expanding association.
Job Description

The YMCA head lifeguard is responsible for safeguarding patrons at the Perkins Family YMCA by preventing injury, accidents or loss of life through any aquatic emergency. The head lifeguard position will have quality assurance duties including checking lifeguard skills. They will report directly to the Aquatic Director. A YMCA Lifeguard has a moral and professional obligation to prevent potential situations by enforcing the rules and regulations of the YMCA of the Chesapeake and responding to any emergency that may occur. Lifeguards must be able to perform water rescues, CPR with AED, administer oxygen and deliver first aid to anyone in distress within the YMCA while on duty.

  • Current Lifeguard Certification
  • Current CPR-BLS, First Aid and Oxygen certification.
  • Receive CPO Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make quick decisions, and recognize the potential for danger or injury.
  • Be 18 years of age
  • One (1) year YMCA lifeguard experience preferred.
Essential Functions


  • Enforce pool rules, regulations and follow protocols set out.
  • Prevent non-swimmers from entering deep water or moving into a high-risk area.
  • Provide consistent surveillance of pool area using the 10:10 rule of scanning.
  • Communicate effectively with others immediately when responding to an emergency
  • Maintain the 1:25 ratio of guard to patron.
  • Wear proper uniform including T-shirt, shorts, rescue tube, whistle, and nametag.
  • Attend all staff meetings and assist Aquatics Director and Senior Program Director with scheduled in-service trainings.
  • Responsibility to oversee the scheduling of all lifeguards for the Perkins YMCA and work with the Aquatics Director overseeing the other pool locations in Talbot County to ensure joint scheduling of all shared guards.
  • Effectively communicate to all guards the shift expectations and adherence to pool policies and facility maintenance.  Ensure all new guards are properly trained prior to their first independent shift.
  • Properly complete all associated paperwork including timesheets, daily maintenance log, pool head count and all other forms.
  • Provide customer service to all members and program members; become knowledgeable of all YMCA programs.
  • Educate patrons to the YMCA Mission statement and demonstrate the YMCA character values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility at all times.
  • Arrive to work at least 15 minutes before your scheduled shift, in uniform.
  • Be able to work all scheduled shifts.
  • Manage the lifeguards while you are on shift. This includes, but is not limited to; ensuring they are maintain their required duties, addressing and documenting any incompliance or failure, communicating with the staff and changes in policy/procedures, and any other tasks that the Aquatics Director may require of you in relation to overseeing the lifeguards.
  • Participate in facility fundraising, special events and Annual Campaign.
  • Complete any assigned maintenance duties and ensure that duties are performed on a daily basis by aquatic staff.
  • Perform related work as required and clerical work as assigned.
