Job Description

Under the direction of the Executive Director – Aquatics and consistent with the mission and policies of the YMCA of Western North Carolina, the Senior Program Director oversees the consistent implementation of best practices in Lifeguarding, Aquatic Safety and Pool Operations across the Association, as well as the management of daily operations and programming for multiple pools throughout the region, including volunteer and staff development, financial management and collaborations with community agencies. The Senior Program Director is accountable for ensuring the delivery of programs and services to YMCA members and participants that span numerous locations. They are a vital member of YMCA leadership staff and a highly visible representative of the YMCA mission and core values. They are accountable for knowing and properly executing YMCA policies and procedures

  1. Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, business, or equivalent is required.  (Extensive related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.)
  2. Three or more years of management experience preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency. (Preferred: multi-department/location supervisory experience)
  3. Ability to direct multiple department operations through volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of branch budget, marketing and public relations, and program development.
  4. YMCA Multi-Team or Branch Leader certification is preferred, or obtain within two years from date of hire.
  5. CPR and First Aid certifications may be required.
  6. Lifeguard & Lifeguard Instructor required, and Lifeguard Trainer preferred.
  7. Swim Lesson Instructor required.
  8. Certified Pool Operator preferred.
Essential Functions
  • Contribute to the overall Y mission of strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility with primary focus in Lifeguards, Aquatic Safety and Pool Operations.
  • Model professional interaction with other employees, members, program participants, volunteers, and the community while always demonstrating the YMCA’s voice and core values.
  • Works with all Aquatic Leadership to ensure all training classes (BLS, LG) are consistently scheduled, appropriately completed and processed as required. Ensure the implementation of the Association’s risk management program to ensure safe facilities and programs for members, volunteers, and staff.
  • Coordinate with Aquatic Leadership to align all operational and program marketing across the Association.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and participation in programs for all assigned branches.
  • Ensure teams deliver quality work within given deadlines that meet expectations with minimal supervision.
  • Develop and enhance the quality and innovation of the member and participant experience to improve retention, cross pollination, and growth within service lines.
  • Develop, coordinate, market, and evaluate service line operations on a monthly basis.
  • Provide direct support to all Aquatic Directors and their staff regarding lifeguarding, aquatic safety and pool operations
  • Recruit, train, and develop program staff and volunteers in Aquatics programs as needed throughout the Association.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with strategically aligned community organizations across the YMCA’s service area.
  • Work with Executive Directors and Aquatics leaders to coordinate usage of aquatic facilities for members, program activities and events across the association ensuring we avoid scheduling conflicts.
  • Establish new program activities within the community in accordance with the association strategic plans.
  • Drive strong recruitment, development, and succession planning processes to ensure the hiring, professional development, and retention of high-quality staff.
    • Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Develop annual budget for portfolio.
    • Monitor monthly financial reports for all centers to ensure that revenue targets are met, and expenses are controlled.
    • Complete monthly variance reports and forecast updates for Executive leadership.
      • Adjust operations as needed to achieve fiscal targets.
  • Ensure staff meetings are productive and high functioning. Continually communicate with and inform service line leadership staff about YMCA initiatives and trends.
  • Work with leadership to set achievable operational and performance goals for assigned staff.
  • Ensure all swim lesson program execution, is within YMCA guidelines and program standards at assigned pools.
  • Ensure all the policies of the organization are implemented, including Financial, Human Resources, and Program Policies.
  • Support the strategic direction of the Association and appropriate committees, cabinets, and other work groups.
  • Respond to participant and community inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Develop committed relationships. Share knowledge of programs, events, and resources with members and participants throughout your home location and within the community when representing the YMCA.
  • Ensure all certifications are maintained at the designated branch level (BLS, Lifeguard, Swim Lessons)
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Required Certifications
  1. CPR and First Aid certifications may be required.
  2. Lifeguard & Lifeguard Instructor required, and Lifeguard Trainer preferred.
  3. Swim Lesson Instructor required.
  4. Certified Pool Operator preferred.
