The Community

Living in "The Region" offers residents a sparse suburban feel, but if you want to get that city feel, it is just a short drive to the Windy City.  We are close to the Indiana State Dunes and Lake Michigan. 

Our Crossroads YMCA consists of five separate branches, located in Crown Point, Griffith, Hammond and Whiting.  Crossroads is expanding and has made several improvements over the past several years:

2010: The Southlake Family YMCA (Crown Point, IN) merged with the Hammond Family YMCA and officially been named the Crossroads YMCA

2011: Griffith Branch opened

2015: Whiting Branch opened 

2019: We completed an addition to Southlake YMCA and renovated The Hammond YMCA.  The Southlake YMCA was re-named the Dean and Barbara White Southlake YMCA as a result of the White Family’s significant donations. 

2020: Griffith Branch moved to an elementary school and is our largest childcare branch licensed as a Level III.

2021: We announced a new destination branch in Hammond, Indiana with a significant partnership with the City of Hammond.

2021: We acquired property to open a Destination Day Camp in 2022.

2021: Announced Schererville YMCA coming soon!

This Full-Time Exempt position has competitive benefits, free Family Y Membership, and continued education including professional certifications paid by the Y.

Under the direction of the CFO, the Controller at Crossroads YMCA is responsible for all day-to-day accounting functions to ensure complete and accurate financial statements, supports the development of the operating budget, manages cash reconciliation and administers approved financial policies and procedures. The Controller also serves as a back-up to the Chief Financial Officer.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting with 5 years of fiscal management experience required. Certified Public Accountant and/or advanced degree is preferred.
  • Non-profit organization and multi-site organization experience is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience of five years or more.
  • Possess strong knowledge and understanding of accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including generally accepted accounting principles, and financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required, including cash management, taxes, banking and forecasting.
  • Experience in software report writing and analysis of financial and operating data.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including experience with system selection, new system implementation and project management. Microsoft Office experience and ability to quickly learn other software programs is required.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid and New Employee Orientation required with 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and problem-solving skills.

 

Essential Functions
  • Maintains accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of transactions.
  • Maintains all necessary records and accounting reports and records all transactions on a timely basis.
  • Prepares and/or reviews accounting entries as necessary.
  • Works with Human Resources and processes biweekly payroll and related payroll transactions and reporting.
  • Assists in monitoring and preparation of monthly financial operations and other analysis and reports as requested.
  • Performs monthly reconciliation of accounts.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises accounting staff including accounts payable and collections.
  • Assists in the development and reporting of the annual operating budget.
  • Assists in the annual audit and other required reporting (YUSA and IRS).
  • Assists in system upgrades and enhancements increasing productivity or enhancing reporting.
  • Serves as a resource person to management and program personnel in all matters related to accounting.
  • Reviews, updates, and/or develops internal control systems and oversees internal audits. Provides recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Manages grant applications, awards, reporting and related accounting for restricted funds.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
