Early Childhood Education - Teacher's Aide

Job Description

Under the direction of the Child Development Director, the teacher aide staff member will assist teachers with classroom activities. Aides will follow the daily routine, implementation of curriculum,  and supervise children. Occasionally aides will be assigned to assist with the front desk answering phone calls, as well as assist parent’s with their questions and needs. This position is also responsible for helping recordkeeping, inventory of supplies in the classroom and any safety issues. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that is in accordance with the association’s policies and procedures that focus on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

 

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 6-12 ECE units from an accredited college.

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Current CPR, First Aid, AED certifications.

  • Safety, Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse prevention, Mandate Reporter, and other assigned in-person/online training within 30 days of hire date.

  • Up-to-date TB test every 2 years. If you have a chest x-ray on file a TB test is no longer required.

  • Must have a current Live scan active on file OR obtain clearance prior to first day of hire (live scan is at the expense of the employee)

  • Previous experience working (paid or volunteer) with children in a developmental setting preferred.

  • Ability to execute and lead age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.

  • Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

  • All employees must be fully vaccinated with Covid-19 vaccine.  Proof of vaccination must be presented to HR.
  • If hired, employee must present a negative COVID-19 test prior to first day of employment.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is not considered light duty.  Employee must be able to lift 60 pounds;  be able stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, kneel, and be in good physical health.   

  • Employee must be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to safely withstand exposure to the elements which include sun, wind, and any weather while on duty.

  • Must be able to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings.

  • Ability to see at normal distance and hear normal conversations and sounds.

  • Use hands and fingers to fill out required forms on regular basis.

     

 

Essential Functions

Administration / Management Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all children’s classroom records in an up-to-date accurate and appropriate manner.

  • Conduct classroom programs in compliance with department policies and procedures following all state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Keep the lead teacher and director informed of incidents, problems and occurrences with staff, children, parents, and program.

  • Complete assignments in a timely, organized, neat and accurate manner.

  • Attend and participate in regular in-service trainings for staff.

  • Assist with the front desk when needed, answering phones, greeting parents and addressing center needs.

 

Facility Management:

  • Advise Child Development Director of necessary equipment repair and general maintenance needs

  • Follow daily opening and / or closing procedures.

  • Maintain work area in an organized and appropriate manner.

  • Insure that classroom and program activity areas are kept in an organized and tidy manner.

 

Program Planning, Development and Evaluation:

  • Follow the goal oriented and theme programs.

  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment for all program participants.

  • Employ consistent methods of child behavior management and work with all staff in maintaining consistent and fair discipline techniques.

  • Give attention to and solve day-to-day “crisis” that occur in the program.

  • Address parent and program participant concerns in a timely and professional manner.

  • Supervise and assist children with meal and snack time.

  • Supervise and assist children with toileting and personal care needs.

  • Supervise nap/quiet time for children.

  • Follow YMCA work rules and procedures to complete all assigned tasks and duties in an efficient, timely and positive manner.

  • Model non-sexist and non-racist behavior.

  • Be cooperative, accessible and an active member of the YMCA staff.

  • Be punctual and responsible to assigned schedule and not abuse staff privileges.

  • Follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines and precautions in a child care setting.

 

SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT:

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications must be current.

  • Staff must adhere to safety protocols related to COVID-19 in a child care setting.  All employees and participants have daily health checks, wear face masks, and practice social distancing
  • In house/Online Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse Prevention, Mandated Reporter, Safety Trainings, & other assigned courses must be complete within the first 30 days of employment.

  • Absolutely no contact with students or program participants outside of the YMCA either in person, via social media, text, online, etc.  Babysitting or caring for children who are enrolled or were enrolled in the program is prohibited.  Any outside contact with current or former enrollees of the program will result in immediate termination.

  • Employees should be aware that all information published on a blog or public website is public accessible. You are advised to be mindful that the information you post on the internet will likely be seen by members of the Santa Monica Family YMCA community and could reflect poorly on your character. Therefore, information posted on public websites that reflects poor character values is putting your job at risk.

  • Employees may not wear headphones or earbuds while on duty.

  • Employees may only use their cell phone when off duty or for emergencies.

  • Employees may not take pictures or post pictures of students or program participants on any form of social media without the consent of the parent/guardian and the YMCA Administration.

  • Employees may not accept financial or cash gifts or payments from parents or guardians.
