Job Description

Under the supervision of the Senior Vice President, the Director of Marketing & Development is responsible for developing, implementing and achieving the association’s advancement, marketing, communication, and development goals.  

This position fills a vital role for the Raritan Bay Area YMCA.  The effectiveness of this person shall be determined by the extent to which the following goals are met:

  1. Recognition of the YMCA as an important and leading community service organization increases.
  2. Mission advancement and fund development goals are achieved through increased community support.  Development of an ever-increasing base of donors, volunteers and participants.
  3. The YMCA is recognized by a consistent image of high quality programs, positive values, inclusiveness and meeting important community needs that strengthen relationships, promote healthy lifestyles and teach positive values to youth.
  4. Participation in YMCA membership, programs and volunteerism increases.
  5. The volunteer workforce is well trained and able to articulate the value and mission of the YMCA in the community.


  • Ability to embrace and commit to the mission, vision and values of the YMCA.
  • Align outgoing communications with a consistent message in order to enhance understanding of our work
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and cultivate positive relationships with all internal and external constituency groups, including donors, volunteers, staff, members and the media. 
  • Demonstrated ability to engage staff and volunteer teams to accomplish the implementation of comprehensive fund development, marketing and communication plan.
  • Demonstrated success in preparing & executing an annual PR/Marketing plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement project timelines.
  • Excellent writing skills so that association goals are communicated to constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, motivate and manage volunteers
  • Ability to conduct donor centered involvement activities leading to increased contributed support to the YMCA.
  • Experience designing and implementing event based development projects. i.e. Walks, Bikes, Golf Outings, Dinners, etc
  • Increase the Y’s visibility to external audiences and reach new and diverse audiences and effectively communicate the Y’s message in order to grow its influence.
  • Knowledge of the various constituencies that comprise the YMCA’s public, ie community leaders, donors, prospects.  This position is heavily weighted on the human relations in order to pursue the goals and objectives of the association. 
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and manage an annual budget.
  • Monitor marketing trends and content relevant to the Y’s mission, and translate information into compelling, actionable, and effective strategies.
  • A professional personal image and the ability to work harmoniously with staff, board, members and the business community are imperative.
  • Ability to observe confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with fundraising Software such as Raiser’s Edge, Tatango, or similar.
  • Able to complete professional translation on all written materials and social media.
  • Experience in securing funding from private philanthropic sources and to grow community engagement and awareness.
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities and able to collaborate across all levels.
  •  Drive the identification of new donors as well as build strong relationships to bring them on board as regular, new funders.
Essential Functions


  1. Creates and executes annual PR/Marketing & Development plans
  2. Develops the annual case for support and fund development plan in concert with the Senior Vice President, President/CEO and other key stakeholders.
  3. Prepares and delivers effective training programs in relation to marketing and development in order to enable volunteers and staff to be successful.
  4. Oversees donor acknowledgement in all areas of fundraising, assuring donor and campaigner recognition.
  5. Develops external knowledge and expertise related to giving trends and the communities we serve.
  6. Coaches and supports other YMCA staff in achieving advancement and public relationship goals.
  7. Supports with dynamic communication and marketing materials, fundraising and other special events. Coordinates with staff the planning, goal setting, orientation and preparation of materials, including soliciting in-kind donations, contributions and sponsorships.  Recruits and works with volunteer committees to achieve event goals.  
  8. Supports other planned events as needed.
  9. Identifies and involves key volunteers and donors.
  10. Oversees the production and distribution of the YMCA promotional materials as part of the PR/Marketing plan implementation.
  11. Serve as the YMCA brand advocate to ensure all marketing, PR, communications are YMCA brand compliant. Visit LINK site for any updates, templates, etc.  Sets and enforces YMCA branding standards throughout all levels and media usage for the organization.
  12. Develops and maintains community contacts to enlist their support and interest while building awareness for the YMCA’s mission, goals and services.
  13. Prepares and monitors department annual budgets to achieve a positive outcome.
  14. Writes communications materials, oversees the management of the association press release schedule and ensures press contact list is maintained.
  15. Oversees the development and maintenance of marketing/PR/advertising resources such as a photo/video bank and testimonial collection.
  16. Assures a consistent image of the YMCA is present in the community through use of news releases, feature stories, mass mailings, program flyers, bulletin boards and critical messages.
  17. Represents the YMCA in community groups and events as needed.
  18. Builds relationships with members; encourages members to build relationships with other members and join in the YMCA movement.
  19. Facilitates and guides the teaching of the values of caring, honesty, respect, faith and responsibility in our YMCA programs.  In addition, models these values personally.
  20. Performs other job related duties as requested or necessary.
Required Certifications
  • Minimum of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited 4-year college or university or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5-years experience in public relations, marketing, communications, special event planning and fundraising.
