Senior Director of Strength & Performance

Job Description


Under the direction of the VP Operations and in accordance with Association policies, the Sr. Director Strength & Performance is responsible for program development and creation of association-wide initiatives, direction and leadership to program creation, risk management, innovative growth, and quality of programming.  This position is also accountable for the overall success of respective Fitness Center Directors and their programs. 


Directly supervises respective Fitness Center department.  As needed, across the Association, provide performance management, training, corrective action, separation, and promotion recommendations Center Leader and/or Fitness Center Director.


Must possess a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 - 5 years of successful Fitness Center program management and development. Must have a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in staff and program leadership.  


  1. Proven ability to display initiative, good judgment and ability to make decisions independently.
  2. Must have the ability to prioritize a high volume of work, follow through on issues, and complete work from multiple sources.
  3. Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills; public speaking, capacity to prepare reports, conduct training programs, create policies and guidelines.
  4. Competent computer skills; Windows environment
  5. High level of knowledge and demonstrated competence in the areas of Fitness Center safety and instruction.  Requires flexible hours to work evenings and weekends.
Essential Functions
  • Develop audit systems to and provide efficiencies to Fitness Center program safety, policy evaluation and adherence across the Association.
  • Develop audit systems to and provide efficiencies to ensure quality benchmarks are met in Fitness Center program delivery and member satisfaction.
  • Provide program development and creation for Association wide Fitness Center initiatives.
  • Function as an expert in Fitness Center programming and serve as a trusted advisor and partner to Center Leaders.
  • Serve as Chair of the Fitness Center cabinet.
  • In collaboration with respective Center Leaders, and respective Fitness Center Directors, develop and manage the annual budgets for each Fitness Center department resulting in achieving enrollment and fiscal targets.
  • Create systems to analyze outside market data and usage to provide Association with overall and center-specific recommendations.
  • In collaboration with Center Leaders, provide direction for center-specific Fitness Center program innovative growth and advancement.  
  • Champion internal/external Fitness Center program initiatives, activities, and goals as determined by the Association.
  • Provide positive influence and direction for Fitness Center Directors that focuses them on meeting and exceeding outcomes which are reviewed and verified through audits, surveys, and on-site visits.  As needed, provide recommendations, and consult with Center Leader on employee issues.
  • Develop and implement guidelines for instructor certification management.
  • Analyze, compile and communicate program recommendations based on participant usage and enrollments.    
  • Lead and assist in developing a recruitment and career development plan for Fitness Center employees.   
  • Accountable to the Vice President Operations for the execution of Association policies and procedures.
  • Be committed to the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee’s Child Abuse/Neglect Prevention efforts as a mandatory reporter.
  • All other duties as assigned.
