Job Description

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Coordinator helps plan, develop, manage, coordinate and conduct aquatics programs including teaching and coordinating swimming lessons, maintaining aquatic facilities, training aquatic staff, implementing and conducting a diversified aquatics program and aquatics events, and performing other departmental activities as required. The Aquatics Coordinator demonstrates cause-driven leadership through the following YMCA Leadership Competencies- Mission Advancement; Collaboration; Operational Effectiveness and Personal Growth.  The Aquatics Coordinator engages in and promotes the YMCA mission through the core values: Honesty, Caring, Responsibility and Respect.

Qualifications

A.  Experience:

  •   Previous experience in Aquatics

B.  Education

  • An associate degree in physical education, recreation or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience managing an aquatic program.
  • Swim Coaching Experience preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with all emergency management guidelines and direct application

 

C. Skills:

  • Assists in the administration of class lesson plans and enables staff to present them.
  • Contact members, helping them to better understand our program.
  • Must be a competent and effective leader.
  • Skills in planning, organizing, systematizing, implementing are essential.
  • Must have proven skills in problem solving and decision-making.
  • Proven ability to handle with integrity confidential and sensitive information.
  • Must be able to prepare reports, correspondence, meet deadlines.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in use of computer applications, particularly MS Excel, Word.

 D.  Interpersonal Skills:

  3. Friendly and polite. Ability to negotiate and manage interactions with employees, coworkers, department heads, vendors as needed.

  5. Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred.
Essential Functions
  • Safeguard the lives of our members and all pool participants first including guarding the pool as necessary.
  • Using excellent customer service skills establish and maintain effective working relationships with all members, other staff and all visitors and constituents of the YMCA.
  • Assist and Support aquatic staff including lifeguards, instructors, seasonal employees, and volunteers for the successful operation of the Y aquatics center.
  • Assist, as needed, to submit payroll biweekly and keep and/or submit appropriate payroll and personnel records.
  • Coordinate aquatics lessons and programs, including engagement of family members in aquatic classes and programs, coordinate and scheduling of instructors, submit program information to the Director of Aquatics as needed and enter into Operations System. Follow up on any balances due from members and patrons.
  • Support Director in ensuring that all Aquatics staff are knowledgeable and understand the Aquatics Center policies and procedures. Assist in coordinating regular trainings (at least monthly) both technical and mission-based.
  • Direct the patrolling of the pool and the enforcement of safety rules and regulations. Assist Aquatics Director with implementing Aquatics policies and procedures including the cleanliness of all pool areas.
  • Assist in ordering supplies and submit timely all substantiating paperwork.
  • Attend aquatics and risk management trainings, meetings, and certification programs as required.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of yearly fund-raisers, special events and campaigns.
  • Assist with promoting and providing quality swim lesson programs to members and community.
  • Work with Aquatics Director to develop, implement, review and monitor participation and retention goals.
  • Support Aquatics Director in motivating assigned lifeguards; review progress and direct changes as needed.
  • Provide support for Aquatics Director in the development of short- and long-range plans.
  • Support Aquatics Director and other assigned staff to ensure routine pool maintenance at Y aquatic facilities, which includes the handling of pool chemicals and wearing and use of a respirator, standing, bending, climbing, lifting at least fifty (50) pounds, and the ability to read gauges and test kits involving color distinction.
  • Follow all safety standards and personnel policies set by the YMCA.
  • Participate in outreach and annual campaign trainings and events.
  • Assist with service use agreements (assuring adequate staff, technical support, running meets.)
  • Handle any issues that arise during shift and report to the Aquatics Director.
Required Certifications
  • Swim Instruction experience and certification preferred
  • Current First Aid, Lifeguard and CPR certification
