This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Associate Vice President of Development at the YMCA of Central New York stewards the Y’s cause, promoting and protecting the brand and reputation as a global, inclusive organization within the community. This position cultivates relationships, solicits, and manages a portfolio of major gifts, and supports the fundraising strategies in support of the Y’s philanthropic endeavors. The Associate Vice President of Development assures the well-being for each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies in accordance with their training.
• Bachelor’s degree or prevalent experience, at least 7-10 years of experience in fundraising, business, communications or a related field or equivalent education/experience.
• YMCA Multi Team Leader certification preferred but not required.
• Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) Certification preferred but not required.
• Entrepreneurial foresight and innovative spirit to recognize future trends and new opportunities.
• 3-5 years of leadership experience with the ability to motivate teams to meet goals and deadlines.
• Experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
• Technology and computer literacy is essential. Applicant must be proficient in fundraising database experience (e.g., Daxko, Salesforce or Raiser’s Edge).
• High-level proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, and a working knowledge of search functions for donor research purposes.
• Experience managing high-level donor relationships with demonstrated success in closing gifts of $50,000 and above.
• Willingness to be hands-on in a role that is demanding and requires a high level of energy and professionalism.
• Excellent organizational and project management skills and ability to prioritize workload in a timely manner to complete assignments with many deadlines and competing requirements.
• Knowledge/clear understanding of fundraising techniques and strategies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, superior interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate professionally with a culturally diverse group of volunteers, co-workers, and donors.
• Ability to quickly grasp conceptual plans and implement them in a timely manner with close attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to meet deadlines, as well as the ability to collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, reason, and solve problems.
• Ability to work independently and work in a collaborative environment, as part of a team with regular contact with the internal department.

• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; completes related reports as required.
• Lead the planning and execution of fund development strategy, ensuring robust volunteer engagement and donor solicitation strategies.
• Analyze performance and implement data-driven improvements to maximize fundraising impact.
• Collaborate with leadership teams to align fundraising goals with organizational objectives.
• Build meaningful relationships with individuals internally and externally, corporate, and foundation donors. Plan and participate in cultivation events, donor recognition programs, employee campaigns, special events, and community engagement activities.
• Oversee donor databases and fundraising software, ensuring accurate data management and reporting.
• Work with the Executive Leadership team to solicit and secure principal and major gifts from individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
• Drive innovation in digital fundraising strategies, leveraging social media and technology to increase donor engagement.
• Measure and share monthly activity through written and verbal communication; deliver actionable insights by analyzing activity metrics and discussing key findings with key decision-makers.
• Set a culture of philanthropy through engaging donors and funders as thought partners and collective problem.
• Train and support staff and volunteers in fundraising best practices, donor stewardship, and campaign management.
• Serve as an inspirational leader for staff; promote a culture of strong integrity, high performance, meaningful collaboration, and continuous improvement that values commitment to equity, learning, diversity, inclusion, and quality.
• Knows, follows, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, procedures, and staff expectations, including those for the prevention of child abuse.
• Ambassador of all YMCA programs with a focus on department offerings and member engagement.
• Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.
