Branch Information 

The Decatur Shelby County YMCA Association is made up of 2 Branches, the Decatur County Family YMCA located at 1 YMCA Way, Greensburg IN 47240 and the Shelby County YMCA located at 2120 Intelliplex Dr, Shelbyville IN 46176.  

The Association offices and the CEO office are at the Decatur County Family YMCA.  

  • The Decatur County Family YMCA is a 74,000 square foot facility that was built in 2000. The first expansion to the facility occurred in 2004 and included an expanded wellness center, racquetball court and an additional gymnasium. In 2022, in partnership with the Decatur County Memorial Hospital the YMCA expanded again to include an indoor playground, an expanded wellness center and family changing locker rooms in two separate locations in the facility. In late fall 2023, we opened our outdoor pickleball courts.    
  • The Shelby County Facility was built in partnership with Major Hospital Partnership (MHP) and opened in the summer of 2021.  The YMCA occupies 39,000 square feet of the 79,000 square foot facility, which also includes 6,000 square feet of shared space for three organizations.  The facility is shared with MHP Physician, and Shelby Senior Services. The facility houses a full line of exercise equipment, a group fitness room, spin cycle room and walking track upstairs, an indoor pool, sauna, gymnasium, and offices on the first floor. Shared space includes cooking kitchen, conference room, meeting room and gathering room. Both facilities have a 24/7 Wellness Center.

Qualifications

Minimum Criteria for Candidates: 

  • Experience: At least five years of senior management experience at a YMCA or a comparable organization, including direct supervision of staff at multiple levels.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with personal values that align with the YMCA mission.
  • Community Engagement: Ability to develop and strengthen relationships within the community.
  • Financial Management: A sound approach to business management, with a strong understanding of financial principles.
  • Strategic Planning and Fundraising: Proven experience in strategic planning and fundraising, including managing annual campaigns and securing grants.
  • Program Development: Experience in developing, reviewing, and enhancing programs to improve cost-efficiency and effectiveness, thereby expanding community engagement.
  • Certification: YMCA Organizational Leader Certification, or the ability to obtain this certification within three years.

 

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, human services, or a related area; a related graduate degree is preferred.
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certification required within three years from the date of hire.
  • Leadership and Management Experience:
  • At least five years of board management experience, preferably in the YMCA and/or not-for-profit sector, covering strategic planning, board and volunteer development, philanthropic development, and multi-site operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, collaborate with, and facilitate a voluntary, not-for-profit organization within a complex internal and external environment, including the capacity to nurture, support, attract, retain, and motivate a diverse team.
  • Financial and Fundraising Expertise:
  • Experience in strategic financial management and fundraising, including annual campaigns and securing grants, with a track record of managing budgets exceeding $1 million annually.
  • Community Engagement and Relations:
  • Demonstrated experience in community relations and partnering community resources with the YMCA to meet strategic objectives.
  • Articulate spokesperson and effective communicator, able to relate to diverse groups from all social and economic segments of the community. Multilingual abilities are a plus.
  • Commitment to YMCA's Mission and Values:
  • Deep commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA, upholding its values and ethics, and recognized as a leader in the community.

Additional Requirements:

  • An understanding of the national and international relationships of the YMCA is preferred.
  • Active participation in community activities, with residency in the Decatur or Shelby County service area strongly encouraged.
Essential Functions

Position Description

The Decatur Shelby County YMCA is on the lookout for a visionary, strategic, and community-oriented individual to take on the role of Chief Executive Officer. The incoming CEO will be instrumental in building trust and expanding the YMCA’s influence throughout our service area. This role involves leading efforts to foster and maintain productive relationships within the community, thereby enhancing our reputation and advancing our mission and cause.

This position is pivotal within the YMCA, a leading nonprofit and charitable organization dedicated to strengthening community ties through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The CEO will set the strategic direction, ensure financial stability, manage staffing, oversee development, and handle operations. Additionally, the CEO will position the YMCA as a key community convener and collaborator, addressing critical social issues and overseeing the operations of two branches.

The Chief Executive Officer will operate under the guidance and policies set by the board of directors, steering the Decatur Shelby County YMCA towards achieving its goals and ensuring its success within the community.

  • Build and Lead Staff: Ensure a talent development system is in place and executed effectively with cultural competence. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Work towards recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting staff that represent the diversity of the communities you serve. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose. Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential.   • Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure your Y is seen as a leading nonprofit, committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other.   • Improve Operating Performance: Engage the board and appropriate staff to develop an annual tactical plan for identifying and achieving key goals and objectives towards operating with safe, relevant, and sustainable practices. Quickly address issues that may arise, forecast future needs, and manage and direct the Y’s operations and activities. Key competencies: Developing Self & Others, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Innovation 
  • Fiscal Management: Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability, while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions while controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies. Key competencies: Fiscal Management, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Developing Self & Others, Philanthropy
  • Steward Fundraising Efforts: Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan that will establish the YMCA as a leading nonprofit organization within the community through the engagement of members, volunteers, staff, and donors. Identify the need for successful capital fundraising, while taking the organization to a new level of effectiveness and impact in annual giving and endowment. Salary Range: 

The proposed salary range is $105,000 to $115,000.

Residency Expectation: 

The CEO is expected to be highly engaged in our communities. Living in Shelby or Decatur County is expected within a reasonable and agreed upon timeframe.
