Will lead and oversee our aquatics programs, including two seasonal outdoor pools. 
Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Association Director of Aquatics, the Senior Aquatics Director will lead and oversee our aquatic programs, including two seasonal outdoor pools. This position requires previous experience in aquatic management, program development, and staff leadership with the ability to recruit and manage a staff of 70+ staff members.  

The Senior Aquatic Director will be responsible for the continued development and implementation of high-quality aquatic programs that align with the YMCA’s mission and values. This role requires strong, organizational and time management skills to ensure that participants and families have an exceptional experience at the YMCA. The director will also be responsible for the administrative aspects of programming, including budget management, staff training, and compliance with safety regulations.  

 

Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in physical education, recreation or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  2. Five or more years of aquatic management experience, lifeguard, swim instructor, or water park experience and/or equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required.
  3. Must understand the basic concepts of a voluntary, non-profit organization, as well as the structure of the YMCA as a partnership of volunteers and staff and accept a commitment to the YMCA mission.
  4. Experience supervising staff and developing pool and class schedules is required.
  5. Must have current certifications in: YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Oxygen Administration; YMCA Swim Instructor certification is preferred. Lifeguard Instructor required.
  6. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  7. Certifications required within the first week of hire: Redwoods Bloodborne Pathogens, Defensive Driving, and Hazardous Communications.
  8. Must be 21 years of age, and have a valid driver’s license as well as the capacity to drive to various locations within the greater San Antonio metropolitan area.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. Work is performed in a fast-paced office, and indoor/outdoor aquatic environments. Position requires attending meetings at different off-site locations.
  2. Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise aquatics activities.
  3. Visual acuity is required for reading computer screens and/or documents and making changes as necessary/required.
  4. Job requires high levels of alertness and concentration. This position requires analytical abilities and multitasking in order to identify problems and recommend solutions.
  5. Job requires accuracy and attention to detail, organizational, and time management skills, while maintaining high levels of initiative in order to work within deadlines.
  6. Occasional stooping and bending with regular lifting of up to 20 pounds is required.
  7. Incumbent must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time, as well as, able to manipulate keyboards, telephone keypads, and writing utensils.

 

Essential Functions

Program Development & Management 

  1. Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote the growth and quality of YMCA aquatic programs at 2 seasonal facilities. 
  2. Executes strategies to ensure that program participants and community members connect with one another and the YMCA.  
  3. Coordinates special events and activities, ensuring alignment with the YMCA values and community needs.  
  4. Maintains the upkeep aquatic facility and chemicals for both seasonal pools throughout the year.   
  5. Under the leadership of the Association Director of Aquatics; provides support to the year-round branches, collecting & reporting data, safety checks, aquatic audits, and aquatic programs outside of our YMCA facilities.  

 

Staff Leadership & Development 

  1. Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises approximately 2 seasonal full-time staff and 70+ seasonal lifeguards & swim instructors at 2 seasonal pools.  
  2. Facilitates communication, sets clear expectations, and provides support along with honesty and transparency to staff. 
  3. Models relationship-building skills to ensure high standards of member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations, and ongoing training.  
  4. Instructs association-wide training(s) throughout the year, influences instructors/trainers by setting the tone/example and assists in overseeing hiring procedures & policies for the association.  

 

Financial & Administrative Management 

  1. Develops and controls department budgets related to aquatic operations at 2 seasonal branches.  
  2. Assures compliance with state and local regulations, ensuring that program standards are met, and safety procedures are followed.  
  3. Provides data and reports as required for assigned programs.   
  4. Maintains payroll, staffing schedules, and reports for 2 seasonal branches.  
  5. Improves the proceeds of the aquatics department and increases participant numbers.  

 

Community Engagement & Philanthropy: 

  1. Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the community. Being a Cause Driven Leader on Duty for your seasonal branches will allow you to immerse self in your new community and build the necessary relationships.  
  2. Provide leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees. 
  3. Secures resources and support to advance the YMCA’s mission through community engagement and fundraising efforts.  
  4. Participates and establishes aquatic grants, provides Safety Around Water services across our association, and completes the required data/documents for each grant.  
  5. Other duties as assigned.
