Founded in 1914, the camp is steeped in natural beauty and tradition. Nestled on the shores of Arbutus Lake, the camp property offers a wide range of outdoor adventures. We’re also proud of our brother camp, Camp Hayo-Went-Ha, located just 40 miles away on Torch Lake.
YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic leader to become our next Camp Director at our storied girls camp. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in an overnight camp setting. Background in wilderness trip programming is preferred. Must demonstrate significant knowledge in the field of youth development. The successful candidate must be able to balance a healthy respect for camp traditions with a desire to innovate and improve all that we do.
This is a full-time, year-round position. The Director is required to live on-site during the summer. If desired, year-round housing is also an option. We offer a competitive salary range of $60,000 - $75,000 based upon experience.
Benefits include paid time off, health/dental/vision insurance, and (when eligible) participation in the YMCA Retirement Fund, in which 10% is contributed by the State YMCA of Michigan.
Program Philosophy
YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps focus on youth development through traditional cabin-group living and progressively more challenging wilderness trip experiences. Our two and four-week camps offer programs designed to be appropriately challenging for specific age groups that foster a scaffolding of skill development and growth opportunities. Campers who experience a summer at Hayo-Went-Ha Camps profoundly benefit from the building of character and confidence and the embracing of life’s beauty and adventure. Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the CEO, this position is responsible for all aspects of Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha operations, including but not limited to: overnight camp and wilderness trip program management & development, budget development & management, staff recruitment, safety/risk management, marketing & promotion, philanthropic initiatives, and oversight of support services (food service, healthcare, office/store, general maintenance). The Camp Director must work productively and collaboratively alongside year-round & seasonal staff, campers, parents/guardians, alumni, volunteers, board members, and community residents.
Minimum of five years of experience in an overnight camp and/or wilderness trip program setting.
Minimum age 25.
Possess a valid, USA state-issued driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and comply with YMCA driving rules to be approved to operate YMCA vehicles.
Ability to successfully plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate camp programs.
Recruit, hire, and train seasonal staff for summer overnight camp and wilderness trip programs.
Develop and implement budgeting strategies.
Create and execute a marketing & promotion plan for camp that results in improved camper enrollment and retention over multiple years.
Cultivate relationships with campers, staff, families, alumni, donors, volunteers, community members, and partners.
Manage all camp support services (food service, healthcare, office/store, and general maintenance).
Comply with all regulations and standards (Michigan LARA, ACA, YMCA, etc.).
Oversee implementation of safety & risk management expectations in all areas.
Participate in annual philanthropy initiatives and special events.

Program Development and Implementation:
Supervise and Collaborate with the Program Director - Wilderness, Adventure, & Retreat Programs.
Co-design, plan, and execute diverse wilderness programs, including camping, backpacking, and adventure activities.
Co-develop and maintain a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with the YMCA’s educational and recreational goals.
Continuously evaluate and enhance program content based on participant feedback and industry trends.
Ensure all wilderness trips are well-prepared, with proper equipment, food, and orientation for leaders and campers.
Collaborate with the summer leadership team to ensure a successful camping season and support on-site programs as needed.
Oversee the management and supervision of adventure courses and activities, including ropes courses, zip lines, climbing walls, and other outdoor challenges.
Co-develop and update program curricula, ensuring activities meet safety standards and educational goals.
Co-coordinate scheduling and logistics for adventure programs, including group bookings and special events.
Staff Leadership and Management:
Recruit, train, and supervise camp administrative and counseling staff, as well as wilderness and adventure program staff and volunteers.
Plan and conduct staff training, meetings, and professional development sessions.
Provide ongoing coaching, evaluate staff performance, and offer constructive feedback.
Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback and development opportunities.
Ensure staff adherence to safety protocols, customer service standards, and operational procedures.
Safety, Risk, and Logistics Management:
Develop and enforce safety protocols and emergency procedures for all wilderness and adventure-based programs.
Conduct regular safety training and ensure adherence to safety standards.
Monitor and address risk management issues, including crisis management and emergency procedures.
Oversee the management of logistics for trip-related travel, including scheduling and ensuring timely departures and returns.
Assist with accident/incident reporting and risk management training, including vehicle maintenance and logs.
Oversee and facilitate high standards of safety, including regular inspection and maintenance of equipment and high and low adventure facilities.
Implement and enforce safety policies and procedures, including emergency response plans.
Stay updated on industry standards and regulations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
Customer Experience:
Gather and analyze feedback from customers to continuously improve all camp programs.
Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction by delivering exceptional overnight and wilderness tripping experiences and addressing any issues or concerns promptly.
Co-develop and implement strategies to enhance camper/guest engagement and satisfaction.

Budget and Administrative Duties:
Prepare and manage the budget for Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha.
Oversee maintenance and inventory management.
Identify and manage funding opportunities, including grants and sponsorships.
Maintain accurate records of program activities, participant data, and staff performance.
Prepare reports and documentation as required by the Camp Director and stakeholders.
Ensure compliance with YMCA policies and local, state, and federal regulations.
Additional Responsibilities:
Monitor and evaluate camp procedures and facilities, suggesting improvements as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director to support the overall mission of the camp.
