Since 1927 YMCA Camp Hanes has been creating safe, memorable outdoor experiences for the young and young at heart. The “500 Acre Memory Maker” provides opportunities for personal growth for our 15,000 campers and guests through our Overnight and Day Summer Camps and our Outdoor Education School Field Trip opportunities and a variety of Retreat/Conference offerings for groups of all types.
In keeping with the mission of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, the Camp Hanes Executive Director is accountable for all programs and operations related to Camp Hanes. The Camp Hanes Executive Director will also play a major role in the visioning and execution of the Association’s strategic plan.
1. Eight or more years of broad management experience, preferably in executive or senior leadership positions. History and work experience within overnight camp setting is preferred.
2. Demonstrated experience with youth program development and delivery, strategic planning, board and volunteer development, and philanthropic development.
3. Demonstrated experience in business management, community relations, program delivery, financial management.
4. Ability to direct major operations in a collaborative manner through supervision and management of staff.
5. Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with various community organizations.
6. Ability to develop, review and enhance programs for both fiscal viability and effectiveness.
7. Commitment to the mission of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina and to its values and ethics.
8. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, human services or a related area is preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and execute on defining the standard of excellence for all program areas; focusing on leadership development and empowerment of Camp staff; creating a sustainable business plan; and developing new programs to extend the mission and impact of Camp Hanes.
- Ensure a fun and exceptional camper experience and ensure that all Camp Hanes programs are delivered safely and to the high standards established by Camp Hanes.
- Develop and support an outstanding staff team. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Camp Hanes directors, ensuring highly effective leadership of all areas of Camp operations.
- Lead and manage the Camp Hanes core summer programs, constantly seeking ways to improve the impact and fiscal performance.
- Ensure that Camp Hanes meets budgeted enrollment goals by carrying the major responsibility for all recruitment efforts.
- Serve as the face of Camp Hanes and ensure the appropriate tone, voice and professionalism of all Camp communications, including communications to key stakeholder groups such as parents, campers, staff, alumni, volunteers, board members and donors.
- Give leadership to all philanthropic efforts including annual, capital and endowment initiatives, with support from Association Development staff.
- Drive accountability of the Camp Hanes directors to actively participate in the Annual Impact Fund by leading volunteer teams and meeting or exceeding established goals.
- Develop and manage the budget for Camp Hanes, giving leadership to staffing, purchasing of equipment and the management of key vendor relationships.
- Set priorities for facility maintenance, capital improvement and expansion working in conjunction with the VP of Operations.
- Represent Camp Hanes on the Mission Advancement Team (MAT), or teams and in other areas as required.
- Execute other duties and responsibilities assigned by the VP of Operations or required by all full-time staff of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, which may include supporting ACA Accreditation, participating in ACA conferences or serving on committees, and special staff training.
Requires vision, speech, and hearing to normal range, with or without accommodations made of sufficient nature for the completion of assigned tasks. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills; must be an excellent public speaker. Ability to stand, walk and drive. Ability to adapt to change quickly, work under stressful conditions on a regular basis, and take the responsibility for the health and safety of others. The Camp Hanes Executive Director will be required to live on-site at Camp Hanes during the core summer program season (May through August).
