Under the direction of the CEO, the Vice President of Operations for the YMCA of South Alabama provides leadership and operational expertise to achieve financial, membership, program, staff, and volunteer goals while strategically aligning and engaging key community partners. The VP of Operations is responsible for the management, maintenance, and day-to-day operations of multiple branch locations and staff while driving performance targets and creating a culture of serving members and staff. The position oversees association-wide fitness programming. The position also leads the Bounds Family YMCA as Branch Executive Director identifies and supports partner organizations in our community to better serve our mission. In addition, every YMCA of South Alabama employee is responsible for upholding our mission by modeling behaviors that exemplify the four pillars of character - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
1. Bachelor's degree in human services, business, social services or equivalent.
2. Five or more years of professional experience in the YMCA or another nonprofit preferred.
3. Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development,
successful membership practices, quality program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility and
property management and sound financial practices.
4. Advanced degree in business, human services, social services or similar filed preferred.
5. Understanding of the mission and cause of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
6. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the
community; track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
7. Strong background in fitness-related fields preferred. Knowledge and management of equipment, program
writing, personal training and (current or former) group fitness certifications ideal.
8. Ability to handle multiple demands and priorities and achieve organizational objectives.
9. YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
10. Fundraising experience in the non-profit environment preferred.
1. Directs the Bounds Family YMCA and supervises the leadership of North Mobile Family YMCA, and Snook Family
YMCA to ensure sound operations and community-focused engagement.
2. Supervise branch leaders to ensure sound operations. Oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of branch
staff. Provides leadership and direction to the branches by coaching branch leaders.
3. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
4. Cultivates, fosters, and advances key strategic partnerships to enhance the YMCA’s work in the community.
5. Identifies potential areas of branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals, and works with staff
groups to develop and implement programs.
6. Coordinates the development of branch boards and committees including recruiting, team building, training,
evaluation, recognition, etc. Provides leadership and direction to volunteer activities (policy and programming) of
the three branches.
7. Develops, manages, and monitors operating budgets and meets or exceeds budget targets. Monitors monthly
financial reports to ensure that revenue targets are met, and expenses are controlled.
8. Fosters a climate of innovation to ensure the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion, with an
emphasis on fitness, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, and collaborations to meet the needs
of the community and achieves association operating objectives. Directs staff & volunteers in the development of
member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new
program initiatives and activities.
9. Ensures high performance and success of annual contributions goals and participates in major capital initiatives.
10. Represents the YMCA and maintains appropriate relationships with area organizations, community leaders, and
businesses.
11. Monitors management, utilization, maintenance and care for entire facilities and all equipment to ensure effective
and safe use; manages risk at branches.
12. Creates a culture that values and fosters equity and inclusion.
13. Assists the CEO in association and branch-related fundraising endeavors.
14. Responds to business communication via phone, text, email within a 24-hour business day.
15. Represents the CEO in the community as needed.
16. Provides reports to committees, the Board of Directors and the CEO.
17. Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
