The YMCA of East Tennessee in Knoxville is seeking a CEO to lead the successful organization to even greater levels of improving lives and community impact. The CEO will provide executive leadership to the Y and, in partnership with the Board of Directors, is responsible for its strategic direction and success. Leads the organization in achieving its mission, including overseeing its financial stability, community and philanthropic relations, staffing, development, and operations, under the policies, directives and guidelines established by the Board of Directors. The new YMCA CEO must be an inspiring and visionary leader, able to articulate the YMCA’s significant impact in a growing East Tennessee area.
The YMCA has 39,441 members, 34,000 participants in programs, 100 full time and 600 part time staff, 5 facilities, 19 childcare centers in schools, and a $19M annual operating budget. The YMCA raises $339,000 in charitable contributions annually.
A highly engaged board of community and business leaders provides the overall strategic direction for the vibrant organization.
While many skills, experiences, and areas of expertise are required to be a YMCA CEO, the YMCA CEO Transition Committee is placing highest priority on candidates with proven success in the areas of:
Community Focus: building current and new partnerships to address the most critical issues facing communities and deliver significant, measurable results.
Strategic Leadership: work with YMCA volunteers and staff leaders to develop, implement, and communicate our strategic plan and long-term vision.
Resource Development: raise contributed income and develop a strong management staff for the sound financial base needed to achieve the results of the strategic plan.
Search Process

All applicants will be notified by September 30th if they are considered as a potential candidate.
Potential candidates will be vetted to determine priority candidates by October 4th. Priority candidates will receive detailed information about the YMCA and community.
Priority candidates will be invited for initial conversations the week of October 14th.
The top candidates will be invited for interviews the week of October 28th.
The new YMCA CEO will be named by November 8th.
The starting date for the new YMCA CEO will be no later than January 1, 2025.
Salary & Benefits
The minimum starting salary for this position is $210,000. A higher salary and incentive compensation may be offered based on a candidate’s proven success in the priority areas listed above.
The benefits for the CEO are the same as for all YMCA of East Tennessee employees, which includes payments to the YMCA Retirement Plan of 12% of salary. A copy of the YMCA’s personnel policy will be provided to all priority candidates.
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Human Services or related area required. Ten or more years of board management experience, preferably in the Y and/or other nonprofit sector, including strategic planning, board and volunteer development, philanthropic development, and multi-site operations required. A combination of both education and work experience will be considered. The Y Organizational Leader certification is required within three years of hire.
