Lead Lifeguard

The South Wood County YMCA is seeking a full-time Lead Lifeguard, to support our growing aquatics operations. 
Job Description

This position is responsible for participating in and providing supervision of lifeguards to maintain a safe environment in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas.  This position also creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.  In addition, the Lead Lifeguard builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the Y community.

Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification preferred, or ability to bridge to American Red Cross Lifeguard within 90 days of hire.
  • CPO certification within 1 year of hire.
  • 1 year of lifeguard experience required, 2 years of lifeguard experience preferred.
  • 1 year of swim lesson experience required.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with American Red Cross standards.
  • Ability to present information to participants and enforce all pool rules.

 

Essential Functions
  1. Participates in lifeguarding and providing supervision of lifeguards – correcting improper practices.
  2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; completes related reports as required.
  3. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  5. Assist in new employee orientations, including opening and closing procedures and best safety practices.
  6. Assist in explaining pool operating procedures, rules, and best safety practices as needed.
  7. Assist in instructing swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, including preparing lesson plans as needed.
  8. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  9. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
  10. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  11. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  12. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  13. Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.
  14. Any other duties as assigned.
  15. Arrive to work in a timely fashion, demonstrating for others to adhere to their scheduled start time.
  16. Adjust the weekday schedule once a month to cover weekend hours, either 1 weekend day per pay period or 1 full weekend per month, as needed.
