Job Description

The YMCA Preschool Teacher is responsible for creating a nurturing and educational environment for preschool-aged children. This role includes planning and implementing age-appropriate activities that promote social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. The Preschool Teacher ensures the safety and well-being of all children in their care and fosters a positive and inclusive atmosphere.

Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum of a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or equivalent. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience working with preschool-aged children in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain). Any additional required certifications as per state regulations.
  • Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to create a positive and engaging learning environment. Patience, creativity, and a genuine love for working with young children.
Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum Planning: Develop and implement a curriculum that meets the developmental needs of preschool children. Plan activities that promote learning in areas such as language, motor skills, social skills, and creativity.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom environment. Implement positive discipline strategies and create a respectful, inclusive atmosphere.
  • Child Supervision: Supervise children at all times, ensuring their safety and well-being. Observe and monitor children’s behavior and development, and address any concerns with parents and the Preschool Director.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff. Provide regular updates to parents about their child's progress and any significant milestones or concerns.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of children’s attendance, development, and any incidents or injuries. Ensure compliance with all licensing and regulatory requirements.
  • Professional Development: Participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities. Stay current with best practices in early childhood education.
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other preschool staff and YMCA team members. Support and assist colleagues as needed, and participate in team meetings and events.
Cause-Driven Leadership Competencies

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry children up to 50 pounds.
  • Active engagement in physical activities with children, including sitting on the floor, standing for long periods, and participating in outdoor play.

Work Environment:

  • Indoor classroom and outdoor play areas.
  • Exposure to common childhood illnesses.
