Aquatics Coordinator

The YMCA in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia is looking for an energetic, cause-driven leader to serve as our next Aquatics Coordinator!
Job Description


The Aquatics Coordinator will assist in all aspects of the Aquatics program to include supervision of aquatics staff (swim instructors) and scheduling aquatic programs to include group swim lessons, private swim lessons, and school-based-learn-to-swim programming. The anticipated work schedule for this position is Tuesday-Saturday.  

  • Two years of aquatics experience.

  • Two years of swim lesson instructor experience.

  • Current lifeguard certification (preferred).

  • Lifeguard Instructor and Swim Instructor Trainer certification (preferred). 


  • Physical ability, including the strength, agility and mobility to perform the essential functions of the position and to supervise program activities.

  • Ability to spend extended periods of time in an indoor aquatic environment.

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time, climb a ladder, lift and carry 50 pounds.

  • The noise level for this position is moderate to loud.

Essential Functions
  • Assists with establishing, directing and evaluating aquatics programming, including but not limited to YMCA swim lessons.  Oversees and ensures the delivery of high-quality YMCA aquatics programs.

  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations. 

  • Assists in recruiting and hiring staff; trains, develops, schedules, reviews payroll activities, and evaluates personnel for aquatics programs.

  • Facilitates and/or conducts swim lesson instructor courses.

  • Performs front line services including lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons.

  • Provides exceptional customer service to members, guests, and aquatic program participants.

  • Assists in planning and conducting staff meetings.  Attends all staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.

  • Serves as a leader in emergency situations.  Reports any accidents or incidents according to the Emergency Operations Plan.  Ensures all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment.
