Job Description

YMCA Camp Carter serves thousands of children, families, and adults throughout the year through its outdoor education, retreats, equestrian, and summer day- and overnight-camp programs on its 360-acre property just outside downtown Fort Worth. The Senior Program Director will lead the development of and implementation of high quality programs for Camp Carter. Facilitating these programs requires an organized leadership team that includes a Senior Program Director whose primary responsibilities are program development and quality assurance in program delivery; hiring, training, scheduling, and overseeing staff; and developing and maintaining customer relationships. This position involves considerable independent work as well as being an effective member of a team, and will be supervised by and work closely with the Operations Director.

Dates and times: This is a year-round, exempt position that requires some evening and weekend availability. It is a requirement of the position that the Senior Program Director lives onsite. Housing is available.

  • Bachelor's degree in human services, recreation, outdoor education, environmental sciences, or other related fields; or equivalent work experience.
  • Four or more years of program management experience, preferably in a YMCA of other nonprofit agency and in a camp environment similar to that of Camp Carter.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.

Experience & Background

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in the development and delivery of programs and activities for outdoor education, summer camp, and/or retreat programs.
  • Desire to work with children and adults in the outdoors.
  • Preferred: instructional certifications in programming such as challenge course facilitation, lifeguarding/water sports, or shooting sports (archery, riflery); or the willingness to obtain such certifications.
  • Knowledge of and experience in business: recordkeeping, customer service, financial management, office equipment use.
  • Technologically proficient at programs including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Not required, but a definite plus: experience with CampMinder, Daxko, and/or SGA systems.
  • Ability to work within a budget and purchase supplies efficiently.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member with Camp leadership staff.
  • Ability to multitask, self-motivated, and dedicated to Camp Carter's success.
Essential Functions

Program Development and Quality Assurance

  • For the Outdoor Education program, which facilitates field trips for almost 10,000 students each school year, learn the currently in place curriculum and improve and build upon it to sustain a nature or environmental program appropriate for the age and ability of students and utilizing camp’s natural environment.
  • Write lesson plans that meet Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) guidelines and standards in areas such as geology and soils, plant adaptations, wildlife habitat, basic astronomy, water studies, animal science, and natural history.
  • Implement a variety of age and ability-appropriate activities in the above-stated environmental areas.
  • For the Summer Camp programs, work with Camp leadership staff to develop, evolve, and implement summer camp programming that delivers the magic of summer camp with the intent of developing campers’ abilities and skills in various program areas.
  • For the Retreats programs, work with outside groups to determine their desired outcomes or goals for their stay at Camp and work with staff to meet those goals with a customer-first approach.
  • In addition to outside groups, the Program Director will also be responsible for planning and overseeing family camps, open houses, and parent’s night out events throughout the school year. 
  • In collaboration with the Operations Director, recruit, train, and supervise staff to ensure program quality is maintained at a high level and with a guest-first mindset.
  • Regularly monitor program delivery, provide feedback and guidance, and provide recommendations and concerns to the Operations Director regarding performance.
  • Ensure that staff meet applicable qualifications for programs, including those set by the YMCA, American Camp Association, and any applicable laws and regulations.
  • Encourage staff development within the YMCA and other professional areas.
  • Working with the Operations and Facilities Directors, ensure that program supplies and areas are well-maintained and cleaned by program staff, and that any necessary supplies are replenished as needed.


  • Communicate promptly and clearly with customers, including retreat group representatives, schools, and camper parents.
  • Communicate with camper parents regarding any behavioral issues or concerns and other issues that may impact a camper’s experience at summer camp.
  • Communicate group schedules with retreat groups and schools.
  • Working with the Camp leadership team, assist with outreach events with goals of camper or staff recruitment.
  • Working with the Camp leadership team and the Fort Worth YMCA Marketing Department, assist with marketing efforts, including social media posting and attending local community events.


  • Schedule part-time staff for program delivery and camp hosting of any outdoor-education or retreats groups, as well as for any camp-hosted events such as family camp, open houses, and parents’ nights out.
  • Working with summer camp leadership staff, oversee camper and staff schedules for day and overnight camp programs.
  • Working with the Operations Director, develop general camp schedules and themes prior to summer.
  • Schedule and lead regular work project and staff training sessions with part-time staff.

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings throughout the year and any other required meetings.

Cause-Driven Leadership Competencies


The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth offers a competitive salary and benefits package for selected candidates. The yearly salary range for this position is $47,000 to $55,000 and will be commensurate with the selected candidate's experience.
