Job Description

THE YOUTH DIRECTOR / CAMP SUPERVISOR WILL SUPERVISE ALL YOUTH AND RECREATION PROGRAMS INCLUDING YOUTH ENRICHMENT, SPORTS, PARENT/CHILD CLASSES, CRAFTS/DANCE, AND YOUTH SPECIAL EVENTS FOR CHILDREN AGES 12 MONTHS+.  LEAD THEMED FAMILY EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR (SNACK WITH SANTA, HEALTHY KIDS DAY, ETC.). 

THEY WILL ASSIST IN COORDINATION OF WEEKEND YOUTH PROGRAMS INCLUDING FAMILY FUN FRIDAYS, FRIDAY NIGHT PRE-TEEN AND QUARTERLY HOLIDAY CAMPS.   THE YOUTH DIRECTOR WILL ASSIST IN PLANNING, CREATING, EXPANDING AND DEVELOPING COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMS THAT WILL MEET THE GOALS AND NEEDS OF THE BRANCH AND COMMUNITY.

WILL COORDINATE QUARTERLY BRANCH PROGRAM REGISTRATION FOR ALL YOUTH PROGRAMS TO INCLUDE PROGRAM SCHEDULES, CCC IMPLEMENTATION, AND WORK WITH MARCOMMS FOR PROGRAM PROMOTION.

YOUTH DIRECTOR WILL SERVE AS YOUTH CAMP DIRECTOR IN THE SUMMER OVERSEEING ALL OPERATIONS FOR THE PRE-K – 3RD GRADE CAMP PROGRAMS.  SUPERVISION TO INCLUDE KIDDIE CAMP, YOUTH CAMP, AND CIT PROGRAM. 

CANDIDATE WILL OVERSEE CAMP-SITE AND CAMP REGISTRATION COORDINATION THROUGHOUT THE YEAR IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE BUSINESS OFFICE MANAGER

IN ADDITION, THE ROLE WILL SUPPORT OTHER CHILD CARE PROGRAMS, EVENTS, AND INITIATIVES, AS NEEDED OR DIRECTED BY SUPERVISOR. THIS POSITION WILL FULLY UNDERSTAND AND BE ABLE TO CONNECT THE NEEDS AND GOALS OF THE PROSPECTIVE PROGRAM PARTICIPANT TO THE VALUE AND BENEFITS OF THE YMCA MEMBERSHIP AND PROGRAMS RESULTING IN A MEMBERSHIP CONVERSION OR PROGRAM ENROLLMENT.

Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a camp leader
  • Minimum of three years of experience supervising youth and family programs and staff.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications strongly desired.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills.
  • Highly motivated and entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to work a variety of hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • High emotional intelligence, as it related to all aspects of the role.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills have the ability to work successfully with volunteers, staff and members on all levels.

 

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for developing, planning, staffing, scheduling, implementation and evaluation of all youth recreation and enrichment programs.
  • Take lead role in building strong branch program base and work with MarComms to promote and jump start new program offerings.
  • Direct all operations of Youth Camp Program (Pre-K-Grade 3), and be integral part of Day Camp Leadership Team.
  • Manage Camp Registration overseeing Camp-Site Portal in conjunction with Business Office.
  • Coordinate Program Registration along with other department heads (fitness, aquatics, etc.)
  • Ensure that all classes have assigned knowledgeable and trained instructors who are teaching proper techniques and skills, to ensure the safety and well being of all participants.  Ensure program curriculum is providing age appropriate skills and successful outcomes.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule, direct, supervise and evaluate personnel and volunteers for areas / assigned programs.
  • Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals for Youth Recreation Programs and Summer Day Camp.
  • Work closely with supervisor to develop, manage and meet program budgets in accordance to budget specifications.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records, making sure program quality meets the standards of the YMCA of Long Island and any external monitoring agencies.
  • Work cooperatively with the Branch child care leadership team, cabinets, partners and other stakeholders. Assist, as needed, with the supervision of Branch Early Childhood (pre-school and UPK) and off-site SACC programs. 
  • Develop and maintains relationships with state camp licensing agency(ies), school administration, parent groups and other organizations / agencies related to assigned programs.
  • Attend / assist with / participate in YMCA fund raising activities, special events, committees, cabinets, trainings, and meetings, as required.
  • Participate in Program Committee and Board of Managers meetings as required.  Participate in island-wide / Branch specific meetings, cabinets, events, as needed or required.
  • Regularly communicate with supervisor to discuss lesson plans and activities, to ensure a good working relationship. 
  • Keep records essential for control, evaluation and reporting, regularly communicating/providing information to supervisor. 
  • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of program participants and staff by providing appropriate supervision at all times. Understand, maintain, and ensure that staff and participants follow safety procedures.
  • Maintain hygiene habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with state and local regulations, as necessary or directed.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and class records for program evaluation and budgeting aspects.
  • Consistently portray a professional image through dress, actions and relationships with others, and create opportunities to speak enthusiastically on behalf of the YMCA.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor and direct reports, as scheduled or directed, to ensure program goals are met.
  • Responsible for weeknight and weekend Director on Duty (DOD) shifts, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or Executive Director.
