Position Purpose:

The Camp Coordinator for family Camps supervise day-to-day Program Activities as well as scheduled program activities. This will include supervision over all program areas, while maintaining a healthy relationship with families. The goal of the Coordinator is to make sure that family camp is a fun and welcoming environment to all families who visit our lake while assisting with additional activities in the evening while making sure the functionality of facilities and staff are in accordance with providing a good program. The Coordinator is an exempt staff member at YMCA Camp Sequoia Lake, you will report directly to the Director. Because our staffing needs change from session to session, we ask that you remain flexible regarding your specific job assignment. 

  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Minimum CPR/First Aid Certification by start date. 

  • Must have a minimum of three years in a supervisory role working in camp, outdoor education or recreation programs.

  • Must posses exceptional decision-making skills, sound judgment, and maturity. 

  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.

  • Ability to become proficient in camp registration software including the taking of payments.

  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply positive and appropriate behavior-management techniques. 

  • Strong willingness and desire to work with diverse populations.

  • Spanish speaking is a plus, but not required. 

  • Ability to communicate in an effective, timely, and positive manner.

  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist staff and campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain a rigorous summer schedule. 

  • Must submit a self-reported health history form and immunization record prior to the first day of work. All submissions will be reviewed by the medical supervisory team.

  • Must pass a criminal background check and drug screening.

  • Must be able to adhere to the YMCA’s zero-tolerance drug, alcohol, and tobacco policy.


Essential Functions
  • Oversee the implementation of YMCA Camp Sequoia Lake’s Family Camp Program under the supervision of the Camp Director.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Director, Registrar, and Assistant Coordinator to ensure high-level functionality of camp programs. 

  • Provide positive leadership to 15-plus camp staff to elevate and maintain programming needs.

  • Availability to camper needs and creating positive outcomes or answers that solve their needs within reasonable accommodation. 

  • Maintaining staff and camper needs with the set outcomes of the YMCA goals and Values. 

  • Communicate with food service and maintenance staff about the special needs of camp/campers.  

  • Keep organized and confidential camp records and submit them to camp Registrars or Director. 

  • Assist in the facilitation of staff training. 

  • Oversees the opening and closing of facilities.

  • Assure adherence to YMCA Camp Sequoia Lake policies and American Camp Association Standards. 

  • Be well-versed in camp Emergency Protocols and have the ability to aid in the facilitation of rescue and evacuation procedures if necessary. 

  • Attend weekly leadership team meetings and report on achievements, challenges, solutions and needs. 

  • Communicate in a clear, positive, and timely manner with camp leadership, families, and coworkers. 

  • Identify and work to solve problems collaboratively with staff and leadership.

  • Aid staff in adhering to a daily schedule and maintaining timely attendance to meals, program activities, etc. 

  • Provide support and leadership throughout the camp season. 

  • Model and teach risk management techniques in every aspect of camp activities.

  • Guide staff in effectively facilitating camp activities.

  • Manage the proper use, care, and maintenance of program supplies and camp assets.

  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and promotes YMCA values.
