Job Description
The Director of Aquatics ensures the aquatics experience is safe, fun, and enjoyable for members and program participants. Duties include staff supervision, program oversight and development. The position will implement new engagement activities, incentive programs, and special events. Overall the position will ensure quality swim instruction, aquatic programs, member satisfaction, and efficiently market their department with goals to increase program participation. Teach aquatic exercise or lifeguard as needed. Ensure pool facilities and equipment are safe, clean and operating correctly. Assume key team leader responsibilities including budget development and meeting goals of the organization.
Qualifications
College or technical degree in athletic training, teaching, or fitness/health field is preferred. Competitive swimming experience a plus. Proven previous experience in supervisory position, Must work both independently and as part of a cohesive team. Certification as lifeguard, CPR and first aid required and instructional certification to teach lifeguarding and CPR/First aid within 6 months of hire. YMCA swim instructor training will also be required. CPO certification a plus.
Essential Functions
- Build, monitor and maintain budgets for aquatics department
- Meet program financial goals, participation targets and quality and safety standards
- Compile and review program statistics that will accurately reflect the condition of the programs
- Ensure programs are aligned with mission in accordance with strategic and operating plans
- Develop new programs and meet the needs of participants and reach under-served segments
- Responsible for personnel in the department
- Schedule staff to adequately supervise programs and ensure a safe environment
- Review and evaluate staff performance and develop strategies to motivate and engage staff
- Ensure staff certifications and records are current and complete
- Build relationships with and among members, create a supportive community environment, assist in recruiting and engaging new members and connect members to the YMCA’s cause
- Communicate information with participants, parents or other persons associated with the programs
- Bid and purchase necessary program equipment and supplies
- Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships within the community
- Coordinate pool schedule and monitors activities accordingly
- Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations
- Create and ensure safe and welcoming environment
- Ability to enforce policies, problem-solve and handle emergency situations
- Ability to assist and communicate with all populations of people regardless of race, age, and special needs

- Support YMCA special events, signature events, and campaigns

Required Certifications
- CPR, First Aid, AED, and YMCA Aquatics Training and Trainer certifications
- American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification
- Oxygen Administration certification within first 90 days of employment
- Certified Pool Operator certification within 6 months of employment
