Youth Program Specialist

Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This position will assist with our Upward Bound Program, Teen Drop-in Nights, Teen Nights, and other special events during the school year.  During the summer, this position will work with our Camp Ulbrich Summer Camp.

Qualifications
  1. Must be at least 20 years of age
  2. Social Work, Psychology, Recreation degree preferred
  3. Must have experience working with children
  4. Must have the ability and desire to work with children ages 10-14
  5. Red Cross CPR-PR/First Aid/AED Certification or equivalent is required prior to start date and must be maintained to meet position requirements.
Essential Functions
  1. Be prompt, reliable and ready to work
  2. Supervise and engage with teens in a positive manner
  3. Assist in providing a safe environment for program teens
  4. Be able to assist and/or run activities with teens
  5. Discipline fairly by being unbiased to the situation
  6. Bring all disciplinary issues to the immediate attention of Teen/Family Coordinator at the time of the incident
  7. Address fellow staff, YMCA members and program participants appropriately and with respect.
  8. Help with program set-up and clean-up
  9. Bring questions, concerns, comments or suggestions to the Teen/Family Coordinator (discreetly, if applicable)
  10. Be flexible to tasks that are considered necessary by the Teen/Family Coordinator
  11. Attend mandatory meetings and trainings
  12. Give advance notice – no less than two weeks – to the Teen/Family Coordinator for time off

  • Recreational environment. Intermittent sitting, active play are required. 
  • Sufficient agility, mobility and strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., to perform essential functions and to supervise programs.
  • Hours will include evening and weekend work. Typical week Tuesday - Saturday 1:00-9:00pm
  • Reliable transportation.
