The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina is looking for a Literacy Program Director to oversee, recruit and train volunteers to teach literacy skills to adults in our Adult Reading and English as a Second Language program, and manage our RISE (Refugee and Immigrant Society of Entrepreneurs) program.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education, English or related field from four-year college or university
  • Hold or obtain as soon as possible Literacy Certification/or ESL Certification.
  • One to two years of related experience, including supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Strong ability to recruit, retain, and coach staff and volunteers; while fostering a positive team atmosphere
  • Ability to work a non-traditional schedule including some nights and weekends
  • Strong interpersonal, organization and communication skills and comfortable speaking in front of a crowd.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Prepare, plan and manage the Literacy program budget.
  • Participate in YMCA events
  • Hold or work toward YMCA Team Leader certification.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED – must obtain certification within the first 90 days of employment and maintain a current certification thereafter.
Essential Functions

Responsibilities include ensuring programmatic outcomes, meeting all grant requirements, supervising a team of part-time program coordinators, program instructors, childcare staff and volunteer tutors and preparing and managing the Literacy budget. The position, based at the Robinhood Road Family YMCA, also has responsibility for promoting and growing the program within our YMCA Association and in the broader community, securing additional funding sources for the program and taking an active role in the Annual Impact Fund Campaign. Finally, the position will participate in the Y’s Diversity, Inclusion, and Global Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, participate in other events of the Y and maintain community relationships with literacy supporters including but not limited to NC Community College System, NC Literacy Association, City of Winston-Salem, World Relief, NC Works, Goodwill, Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Winston Salem Street School, local colleges and universities, and individual donors.

 Schedule varies based on program needs; includes evenings and weekends. Job includes local travel to other learning centers. The Literacy program is dependent upon grant funding and has been in operation for 20+ years.
