Job Description

The HR Generalist is a key member of the People and Culture Department. Responsibilities include staffing and retention, new hire orientation, employee relations, workers’ compensation / OSHA, training and development and employee communications, among others. Develops strong working relationship with members of the People and Culture Team and YMCA leaders. Reinforces our department’s position as a trusted, credible partner to those we serve within the Y.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or 3-5 years of HR experience in a responsible HR capacity with a basic knowledge of the legal implications of the employment relationship preferred.
  • PHR or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Understands the impact of change on people, processes, procedures, leadership and organizational culture.

  • Proficiency in business and human resource-related computer applications, including time and attendance, benefits, payroll, and performance management. 
Essential Functions
  • Contributes to the overall Y mission of strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • Performs quality work within given deadlines and expectations with or without direct supervision.
  • Interacts professionally with employees, members, program participants, volunteers, and other individuals within the community, always being mindful of the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.
  • Serves effectively as a team contributor on all assignments, including but not limited to diversity and inclusion initiatives, employee wellness programs and organizational development efforts.
  • Effectively uses and understands HRIS systems. Compiles HR metrics and data for reporting purposes. Analyzes HR data to identify trends and insights to support decision-making and improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization. 
  • Ensures compliance with labor laws and regulations, including timely and accurate submission of data requested by the EEOC, OSHA, YMCA of the USA, Department of Labor, etc.
  • Makes recommendations for changes and enhancements to People & Culture policies, processes, and programs.
  • Maintains visibility by meeting with those we serve and visiting branches on a regular basis.
  • Supports employee relations, employee engagement, and retention efforts. 
    • Implements initiatives to enhance employee engagement and promote a positive work culture.
    • Identifies factors contributing to employee turnover and develops strategies to improve retention.
    • Attends, participates in and documents employee disciplinary meetings, investigations and terminations, as requested. Address grievances and complaints following established procedures.
    • Alerts Vice President of People and Culture to high risk situations. 
  • Supports talent acquisition.
    • Collaborates with hiring managers to identify staffing needs and job requirements.
    • Develops job descriptions and posts job openings on various platforms.
  • Supports talent management, including staff training, retention, recognition, and communication.
    • Helps assess and evaluate training and staff development needs and make recommendations accordingly.
    • Identifies training needs within the organization and develops training programs.
    • Conducts employee training sessions and workshops.
    • Encourages professional development opportunities for staff members.
  • Maintains and supports performance management and appraisal programs.
    • Assists employees and supervisors by offering advice that is consistent with YMCA policy and procedure. 
    • Supports managers in setting performance goals and conducting regular feedback sessions.
    • Assists in the development and implementation of performance management processes.
    • Coordinates performance appraisals and assists in addressing performance-related concerns.
  • Assists with compensation and benefits programs, including but not limited to benefit plan communication and enrollment, adherence to the Salary Administration Plan, and assisting with payroll as needed.  
  • Receives and completes employment verification requests. 
  • Serves as a resource to the association on human resources matters. 
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and exhibits discretion at all times. 
  • Demonstrates strong internal customer service skills while serving association supervisors and employees. 
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The HR Generalist has no direct reports so the ability to develop relationships and inspire others through influence and collaboration is crucial.
