Job Description

If you love sports & camp and have a passion for providing a positive team experience for children and adults, the South Wood County YMCA & Camp Alexander has just the job for you! We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and innovative Sports & Camp Director. The Sports & Camp Director develops, plans, organizes, implements, supervises and evaluates all youth, teen and adult sports and camp programs, staff development and site maintenance. The Sports & Camp Director oversees the management of programs, facilities, volunteer and staff development, financial development and collaborations with the community agencies in meeting the needs of its program participants. Additional responsibilities include preparing and managing the annual budget for the assigned areas within approved budget guidelines, and communicating positively and effectively with all participants, volunteers and staff, including timely response to phone calls and requests for information.  The ideal candidate will have the ability to supervise, train and support program staff. They must possess the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, members and the community. 

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. 

Qualifications
  • Degree in Sports Management, recreation or related degree a plus
  • 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role, sports related preferred
  • Previous experience hiring, supervising, and development of staff
  • Previous experience developing and managing a budget
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification within 60 days of hire
  • Mandated Reporter Training within 60 days of hire
  • Shaken Baby Training within 60 days of hire                                                                                 
  • Link Leader Training within 60 days of hire
Essential Functions
  • Recruit, hire and train all staff and volunteers relating to assigned programs
  • Develop and supervise youth and adult sports & camp programs, tournaments, special interest classes, and gym schedules at multiple locations
  • Develop and manage the department budget
  • Create and implement new programs that meet the needs of the community and the goals and objectives of youth and adult sports & camp programs as set forth by the South Wood County YMCA
  • Represent the association and maintain relationships in a professional manner with organizations such as City Recreation Department and local school districts
  • Build and implement an adequate marketing strategy to assure the success of youth and adult sports programs
  • Administer all aspects of the youth and adult sport programs, including, but not limited to: Basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, football, pickleball, tradition camp programs and summer camp
  • Establish, improve and maintain harmonious relationships by meeting individually with school athletic directors and other key community members who assist in developing programs
  • Responsible for scheduling, supervising and administering off-site facility rentals according to association guidelines
  • Participate as an equal partner in membership retention efforts and in the responsibilities assigned to all exempt staff
  • Participate in Director on Duty assignments and responsibilities
  • Act as a primary responder to emergencies
  • Excellent written, verbal and communication skills
  • Attends staff & committee meetings and trainings as required, completes all online trainings, including staying current on new programs
  • Upholds YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management
  • Organize and assist with special events
  • Work with Childcare Director in regards to our licensed childcare camp programs during the summer
  • Prepare Camp Alexander during late spring for summer camp and programs
