Position Description and Board Expectations: 

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The CEO/Executive Director at the Unicoi County Family YMCA sets the strategic direction of the organization; oversees its financial stability, staffing, development and operations; and positions the Y as a community convener and collaborator to address critical social issues. The CEO/Executive Director works under the policies, directives and guidelines of the board of directors.

YMCA Facility Features Include:

Main building – 24,631 sq. ft.  Childcare house – 890 sq. ft, Craft Room – 420 sq. ft. and all are located on adjoining property. There is an indoor pool, gym, sauna, steam room, Aerobics room, Cross training room, Fitness Center with 24/7 access, paved walking track, Outdoor Pavilion, with Outdoor playground equipment on order. Current Y was originally built in 1973 and expanded in 2000 and 2009.  House was built in 1948.  Craft Room was built in 1960 and remodeled in 2020. An outdoor pool location owned by the city and staffed and operated by the YMCA.

Membership:

At the end of July:  1478 units, 2794 members. 22% Adults, 10% Couple, 17% Family, 6% Senior Adult, 3% Senior Couple, 8% Single Parent Family, 2% Youth, Optum 24%, Silver & Fit 6%, Staff 2%

Programs:

The Y hosts summer camp and after school care, youth basketball, spring and fall soccer, girls’ volleyball, indoor pickleball, homeschool PE, triathlon, road race, various aerobics classes and swim lessons and challenges. Staffing and operation of the outdoor city pool. Currently pursuing licensed childcare. 

Staff: 

9 FT staff with the CEO having 5 direct reports: CFO, Aquatics Director, Property Manager, Childcare Director, Fitness/Marketing Director

Volunteers: 

The Y currently has 12 members of the Board of Directors.  On average the local Y has 225 volunteers helping with events, coaching and teaching programs.

Financial:

The current annual budget is $987,000. No debt and covers all depreciation.  Typically keep 6 months cash reserve for equipment replacement, building repairs or improvements.

Community:  

The annual campaign 2022 goal was $10,200 and raised $7,170.  2023 Goal $25,000 and raised $12,701 through July.

Advantages to Area:

The Appalachian Trail runs through our county along with the Nolichucky River, which is a whitewater rafting and a trout fishing river.  The local roads are lightly traveled and are great for riding a bicycle or motorcycle.  There are plenty of hiking and mountain biking trails along with a couple of state parks.  An interstate highway that gives easy local access to Johnson City, TN (25 minutes) and Asheville, NC (45 minutes). 

The Y is in Unicoi County, TN and serves parts of Washington and Carter counties along with parts of western NC.  Unicoi County is a rural area and has a population of approximately 18,000.

Qualifications

Minimum Criteria for Candidates:

  1. Accredited 4-year college degree and/or relevant experience.
  2. Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  3. Minimum five years prior experience in a management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  4. Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  5. Have the ability to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and the effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities in which we serve.
Essential Functions

Key Deliverables of the CEO: 

Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure your Y is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and each other. Build and Lead Staff: Ensure a talent development system is in place and executed effectively with cultural competence. Hire, motivate, nurture, retain, and hold staff accountable for key objectives. Work towards recruiting, retaining, developing and promoting staff that represent the diversity of the communities you serve. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose. Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential. Steward Fundraising Efforts: Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan that will establish the YMCA as a leading nonprofit organization within the community through the engagement of members, volunteers, staff, and donors. Identify the need for successful capital fundraising, while taking the organization to a new level of effectiveness and impact in annual giving and endowment. Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to create and develop a strategic plan that addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y and includes defined organizational strategies, a clear implementation plan with deliverables, and measurable goals. Key competencies: Change Leadership, Communication & Influence, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Program/Project Management

Improve Operating Performance: Engage the board and appropriate staff to develop an annual tactical plan for identifying and achieving key goals and objectives towards operating with safe, relevant and sustainable practices. Quickly address issues that may arise, forecast future needs, and manage and direct the Y’s operations and activities. Fiscal Management: Use financial analysis with CFO to forecast financial trends, growth and stability, while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Develop and implement stewardship strategies. Salary Range:  $55,000 - $70,000 plus performance bonus.
