Director of Operational Support

The Alliance of New York State YMCAs is seeking a proven professional with experience in operations to consult and support local YMCAs.
Job Description

The primary role of the Director of Operational Support is to manage the Alliance’s strategic priority to advise and support YMCAs in the advancement of their operations.

The principal objectives are as follows:

  • Build capacity and sustainability of YMCAs in New York State by directly providing them with exemplary individual and innovative operational support services.
  • Act as an active resource for YMCAs by identifying solutions to their operational needs and challenges.
  • Conduct operational assessments for interested YMCAs, individually and/or within Regional Networks.
  • Build and enhance collaborations and shared services among YMCAs.
  • Provide operational support to YMCAs regarding their compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Work in collaboration on assigned YMCA service delivery projects.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • At least 5 to 7 years of demonstrated experience in successful day-to-day operations of a YMCA or related organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in risk management, and compliance with regulations relevant to a YMCA or related organization.
  • Proven ability of successfully leading through change and adapting well to new situations, obstacles and opportunities.
  • Strong and demonstrated interpersonal, verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a manner that reflects a true understanding of the audience.
  • Skill in engaging successful strategies that inspire and build commitment to achieve overall goals.
  • Motivated, self-starter with the ability to work independently, as well as within a team.
  • Ability to gain consensus among principals in challenging environments and situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and manage projects, with superior technical and project management skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Travel extensively and consistently across New York State and national meetings.

Essential Functions
  • Build sustainability and operational efficiencies at YMCAs in New York State.
  • Consistently contact each YMCA in New York State and assess their operational and external needs.
  • Identify and encourage new and innovative operational opportunities for YMCAs in New York State.
  • Advise and act as a resource for YMCAs related to state regulatory agencies, include the Office of Children & Family Services; Department of Labor; Department of Health; etc.
  • Attend local YMCA Board Meetings, as necessary, to identify and achieve the operational and risk management support goals and efficiencies of YMCAs.
  • Encourage and manage relationship-building among YMCA CEOs, COOs, operations staff and Volunteer Leaders.
  • Address the operational and risk management needs of all YMCAs in New York State, regardless of their capacity and budget size.
  • Act as a point of contact for YMCAs to access operational support services provided by the Alliance, third party partners, the YMCA Regional hub, and YMCA of the USA in the following categories:
    • Operational Assessments;
    • Human Resources;
    • State and Federal Employment Law;
    • Risk Management;
    • Managing and Leading Staff;
    • Facility Evaluations;
    • Operating Budgets;
    • Program Management; and
    • Grant Management.
  • Utilize LINK, Y Portfolio and all other systems provided by YMCA of the USA to build capacity among YMCAs in New York State.
  • Routinely travel to YMCAs in New York State and build a strong professional relationship with YMCA executives, operations staff, risk management staff, and volunteer leaders.
  • Assist Alliance staff to facilitate and coordinate YMCA Regional Networks and coordinate Peer Networks among operations, facility and other YMCA staff, as assigned.
  • Assist Alliance staff in advocacy and grassroots efforts, as assigned.
  • Assist Alliance staff with the delivery of statewide programming, as assigned.
  • Attend professional development opportunities and other meetings, as assigned.
  • Provide reports and updates to the Alliance of New York State YMCAs’ Board of Directors as necessary.
  • Provide reports to YMCA of the USA on service delivery objectives.
  • All other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
