Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Development Officer, the Major Gifts Officer has primary responsibility for securing annual gifts, major gifts and planned gifts for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine and supporting the branches as part of the Association Development Office team. The Major Gifts Officer will be an integral part of the staff and volunteer team committed to advancing the mission of the YMCA by increasing contributions and creating a donor-centered culture. This person will work in partnership with the branch teams to build a prospect portfolio and successfully identify, cultivate and secure major gifts. He/she will have individual and team monthly meeting targets and yearly monetary measurables to reach as well as help plan volunteer, prospect and donor cultivation and stewardship events accordingly.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Proven and successful track record of raising major gifts.
  • Ability to develop and steward strong relationships and to motivate their participation in philanthropic efforts is critical.
  • Driven by and motivated to build a robust and diverse portfolio of major donors of various generations/constituencies.
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work in a positive manner with others and a historical perspective the YMCA.
  • Outstanding time management skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to direct and motivate senior staff.
  • Knowledge of and experience with capital campaigns and planned giving.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Proficient in all standard business software and knowledge of databases, Raiser’s Edge experience is a plus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • Ability to work with integrity, discretion and a professional approach.
  • Must be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Obtain and maintain all new hire certifications and trainings within 90 days of hire.
Essential Functions

  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular and clear communication within area of responsibility.
  • Raises philanthropic support locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Prioritizes solicitation of $5,000 - $10,000+ gifts for the annual campaign and $25,000 - $100,000+ gifts for major gift support.
  • Grows philanthropic support through planned giving commitments.
  • Effectively manages 100-120 relationships with the primary focus on engaging top prospects and securing new major gift donors; the secondary focus on stewarding Triangle Society members, Legacy Society members, major gift donors and increasing current donor participation.
  • Participates in all aspects of the gift cycle: Initiates contact with major gift donors, develops appropriate cultivation strategies including working with volunteers, moves potential donors in a timely fashion towards solicitation and closure, solicits gifts, maintains stewardship contacts with donors.
  • Assists the Chief Development Officer in creating strategies to strengthen the major gifts and planned giving programs.
  • Trains and coaches branch staff and volunteers who are assisting in Annual Campaign major gift fundraising.
  • Conducts an average of five or more weekly visits with major donors and prospects.
  • Works collaboratively with Development team, branches, volunteers and YMCA of Greater Brandywine staff. Offers strategy and counsel to those who are managing relationships and leads volunteer committee and engagement as work requires.
  • Assists Branch Executive Directors with the recruitment of diverse volunteers and board members across multiple dimensions of diversity.
  • Assists with planning for development events.
  • Supports the Chief Development Officer and Development Team in all duties as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
