Group Fitness Director

The YMCA of Metro Milwaukee is currently seeking candidates for Group Fitness Director at it's Rite Hite branch in Brown Deer, WI. 
Job Description

Under the leadership of the Group Exercise Executive and in the accordance with the Association policies, the Group Exercise Director is responsible for the overall quality, growth, and facilitation of group exercise programs; engagement, safety and satisfaction of participants; facility/studio, equipment and instructor readiness for class; and the supervision, development and retention of group exercise instructors. The Group Exercise Director will work in conjunction with the Group Exercise Executive to develop and implement innovative programs based on member feedback and observations during their shift.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent product knowledge of Group Exercise programs (delivery and content) and the ability to teach, instruct, coach and perform multiple group fitness classes per week
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing at least 50 pounds
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks, i.e., move fitness equipment, as necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position
  • Proven ability to display initiative, good judgment, and an ability to make decisions independently
  • Ability to develop ongoing relationships with members and participants, leading to enhanced member retention and program participation
  • Ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Must be able to recognize and respond to unsafe situations
  • Ability to teach, explain and demonstrate group exercise movements at all proficiency levels in the class format
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills; public speaking, capacity to prepare reports and conduct training programs.
  • Competent computer skills; Windows environment

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for direct supervision, including hiring and training, of Group Exercise Instructors

Essential Functions
  • Provide shift leadership to group exercise program and participants ensuring consistent program delivery which includes the ability to teach a wide array of formats for the purpose of class substitution in the absence of a scheduled instructor.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for all center/site questions and concerns regarding programs and instructors; with the expectation to bring timely resolution to all issues.
  • Responsible for working with the Group Exercise Executive to create, manage, and achieve department budget for the fiscal year.
  • Recruit, hire, retain and train group exercise instructors.
  • Responsible for submitting accurate staff time records to payroll for processing.
  • Conduct continuous program and instructor evaluation for the purpose of instructor coaching and training. Provide instructors timely feedback based on observations.
  • Ensure instructors have all necessary resources to start and deliver a quality class on-time. This includes equipment readiness and room set up.
  • Use “Listen First” skills to develop deeper relationships with program participants and identify program needs to enhance and develop program offerings.
  • Hold instructors accountable for providing a welcoming, supportive environment for all participants, that accommodates all skill levels
  • Develop group exercise program and instructor schedule to meet participant and center needs.
  • Collaborate with center leadership including teams and peers at other centers to ensure consistent excellence in service.
  • Participate in membership retention goals and annual campaign as requested, including specific departmental goals and events.
  • Attend all required meetings/other related trainings; comply with policies as indicated by the Group Exercise Executive.
Required Certifications

National Group Fitness Certification (i.e., ACE, AFFA, YMCA, etc.) required. Experience teaching group fitness classes required. College Degree in Health and Wellness field preferred.
