The Director of Fitness and Health Programming is a key position at the Bangor Region YMCA, a leading nonprofit in Maine committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Director of Fitness and Health Programming oversees the Y’s group fitness and evidence-based programing, understanding its impact on the lives of all who live in the Greater Bangor Region. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

  • Two to three years of related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science/Exercise Physiology, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required.
  • Trainings to be completed before start of duties include Child Abuse Prevention, Blood borne Pathogens, Workplace Violence, Sexual Harassment, and Elder Abuse.
  • Holds current and relevant group exercise and personal training certifications or is willing to obtain within three months of hire.
    • ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist, ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist, and/or NASM Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist preferred
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Experience in exercise testing preferred
  • Experience in Cardiac Rehabilitation preferred.

  • Directs, instructs and supervises high quality evidence-based programs to meet the needs of the community and to fulfill YMCA objectives. 
  • Supervises the Group Exercise Specialist to ensure high quality group exercise programs meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
  • Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events.
  • Develop and manage department budget.  Demonstrate sound fiscal management skills.
  • Supervises and assists the Training Manager with coverage of personal and small group training sessions/programs.
  • Supervises and assists the Health and Wellness Clinical Specialist by conducting some evidence-based program classes.
  • Leads and works with Senior Team to develop and implement a corporate wellness program.
  • Conduct regular in-service trainings for staff & volunteers reviewing department protocols, emergency procedures, and customer service objectives.
  • Establishes new program activities and works with community partners to expand programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with important healthcare figures in the region.
  • Effectively communicates member status back to referring providers.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs instructors and volunteers as needed.
  • Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Works closely with the Director of Grants and provides stories, statistics, budget numbers etc. for the writing of and reporting out of grants.
  • Assist with design and implementation of a marketing plan to increase enrollments in Wellness programs.
  • Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events.  Closely monitors the cleanliness and condition of all fitness facilities.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Acts as a role model for the values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility in dealings with staff, members, and children.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
  • Keeps all equipment needed for programs in good working condition and purchases new equipment within the parameters of a yearly budget.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Programs Operations Officer and other Sr. Team Members.
