Job Description

The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity is seeking a Senior Accountant to join a dynamic finance/accounting team.  Under the general direction of the Vice President of Finance, the Senior Accountant is responsible to manage financial assets through the processes of billing, receivables, collections, handling grant expenses, preparing journal entries, monthly financial statements and reconciling bank accounts. The Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining the organizations general ledger, which includes ensuring all accounts are reconciled monthly and adequate source documentation is maintained to support reconciliations. The Senior Accountant will be required to develop a thorough understanding of QuickBooks - the Association software program.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance.
  • Minimum five years of experience in accounting and three years of experience leading a team.
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, knowledge and experience in QuickBooks, and experience working with accounting software.
  • Proficient in variety of accounting functions including but not limited to General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Financial Statements.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Strong understanding of federal, state and local tax regulations.
  • Not-for-profit experience is desired.
  • Strong office management skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills. Must be detailed oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in a professional manner, displaying tact and diplomacy when needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Essential Functions
  • Process daily cash report, process and/or review bills, contracts, vouchers and grants for all operations with a focus on Youth Development, Membership and Financial Development.
  • Initiate and review Membership drafts and monitor daily cash receipts to ensure internal controls are maintained. Analyze revenues to compare with historical patterns and alert management to any significant deviations.
  • Review program revenues to ensure internal controls are maintained and that revenues are collected in a timely fashion.
  • Manage the Accounts Receivable process ensuring collections in a timely manner.
  • Reconcile bank statements to the General Ledger in a timely manner each month.
  • Assist in maintenance of the Fixed Asset (database) and capital expenditures.
  • Prepare monthly statistical and analytical financial reports.
  • Prepare/Complete monthly departmental reconciliation of all revenues. Reconcile and Analyze balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare the weekly and monthly reconciliation of Camp Linwood’s contracts and revenue.
  • Prepare journal entries and perform month-end closing activity and preparation of monthly financial packages.
  • Review and justify variance to budget/forecast and previous reporting period on the monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Prepare and assist with compilation of documentation for all audits.
  • Maintain documentation of all insurance (e.g., liability).
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of the annual organizational budget.
  • Review and analyze grant requirements.
  • Ensure reports, records and transactions are maintained and performed accurately and promptly and in accordance with Federal and State laws where applicable.
  • Assist the Accounting Staff such as Accountant, Jr. Accountant as needed.
  • Supervise the Accounting Staff such as Accountant, Jr. Accountant by overseeing their work for accuracy and timelines and provide guidance to improve their work performance. Assist the VP of Finance in their recruitment and selection process and provide feedback related to their performance management including performance reviews & corrective action (coaching and counseling)
  • Occasionally travel and drive for the YMCA business as required in accordance with Newark YMCA Policy.
