Job Description

The YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County is seeking a highly organized, self-starter who is passionate about bicycle safety and repair to join our team as the Bicycle Program Manager.  The position reports to the Associate Executive Director and is responsible for developing, organizing and implementing high-quality bicycle programs. Based at the YMCA in Kingston, NY, the position includes travel to locations throughout Ulster County and occasional travel in New York State.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS

Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree.

Successful completion of the League of American Bicyclists’ (LAB) Smart Cycling Course.*

Passion for bicycling and the physical, economic and spiritual benefits it brings to the community.

A strong interest in bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Teaching or childcare experience. 

Ability to independently develop creative educational strategies.

An interest in youth development and a patient attitude.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work independently, collaboratively and flexibly.

Ability to meet travel requirements associated with the position.

Ability to lift 30 pounds.

Completion of YMCA mandatory training. 

*If not already attained, the successful candidate will be required to complete the Smart Cycling Course and pursue certification as a LAB League Cycling Instructor (LCI).

Essential Functions

Responsibilities:

Oversees the Bike It! youth education program.  Organizes and conducts after school and Saturday programs for elementary and middle school youth.  Organizes and conducts summer safety education programs in collaboration with the City of Kingston and the Read and Write program.  Purchases all educational materials and supplies. 

Delivers curricula including Safe Cycling, Learn-to-Ride, Friendly Driver and Walk Safe, Bike Safe.  Develops new traffic safety educational programs.

Manages the Lend-A-Wheel Bicycle Recycling Program.  Ensures that the necessary tools, parts, and supplies are available for bicycle repairers.  Maintains an accurate and up to date inventory of donated bicycles and individuals requesting bikes.   Purchases all parts and supplies.  Supervises the part-time Bicycle Mechanic.

Recruits, trains and manages volunteers.

Maintains purchasing documentation for grant reimbursement and YMCA accounting purposes.

Organizes and conducts community bike repair clinics. 

Conducts outreach to underserved communities and develops events and activities to meet their needs.

Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations, government agencies and educational institutions.

Serves as Event Director for the annual Tour De Kingston and Ulster bike ride.  Solicits sponsors, secures registration and rest stop sites, plans routes, coordinates with law enforcement and recruits and supervises volunteers.

Generates program income through grant writing, fundraising events and solicitation of donations. 

Responds to all YMCA member and community inquiries in a full and timely manner.

Serves as YMCA Liaison to Bike Friendly Kingston.

Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.  Prepares reports for grant funders and YMCA leadership.
