Job Description

The Senior Communications Director position offer a unique opportunity to impact multiple YMCA associations within the greater Tampa Bay area. Under the supervision of the Chief Marketing Officer and responsible to the CEO, the Senior Communications Director plans, organizes, directs and evaluates all communications and public relations functions in order to achieve and maintain favorable public awareness and support of the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and the YMCA of the Suncoast. A key responsibility in this role includes working with local media outlets to receive steady, regular coverage and positive exposure for the Y brand. This position also provides counsel to all YMCA Centers and program locations on the public relations aspects of programs, events, branding and policies. The successful candidate will create and manage crisis communication plans for area YMCAs while continually assessing and analyzing the state of public opinion as it affects our local YMCA brand. This individual will need to demonstrate strong and effective writing skills to execute all communication materials including press releases, emails, newsletters, testimonials, social media and other messaging needs.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations or related field, plus 8+ years’ experience in public relations or communications position. 
  • Particularly personable with great relationship skills.  An assertive leader with a great capacity to coach and support associates through media experiences.
  • Spokesperson as needed for the Tampa and Suncoast YMCA associations.
  • Possess superior writing and editing skills.
  • Planning and project management expertise.
  • Experience with planning and implementation of development and campaign materials.
  • Technical expertise in preparing audiovisual presentations and materials.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be highly organized and have the ability to work with confidential matters.
  • Local travel is required weekly between Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Pinellas and Citrus County.
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.
  • Prior YMCA communications experience preferred.
  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED and Oxygen Administration.
Essential Functions
  • Support all center and branch communication needs.
  • Establish innovative communication plans and objectives for the Tampa YMCA and YMCA of the Suncoast to increase the amount of earned media in the market raising the awareness level of the Y’s mission.
  • Actively develop close media relationships in the Tampa Bay market to include all forms of TV, print and electronic media. Organize and conduct news conferences when appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain supportive working relationships with a wide range of community, media and professional organizations.
  • Work with CEO on all internal and internal written communications. Provide immediate communication and messaging support to all senior leadership as needed. 
  • Develop, implement and manage a crisis management plan working closely with the Director of Quality and Risk Assurance. Implement training and guidelines for centers so key staff are aware of their roles, responsibilities and talking points.
  • Oversee Communications and Social Media Manager including all social media plans, training and execution.
  • Work alongside and collaborate with the Director of Stewardship on fundraising communication needs.
  • Provide 24-hour, weekend and holiday public relations coverage to all media.
  • Manage media monitoring system to accurately report media activity daily, weekly and monthly.
  • Lead on delivering impact messaging through multiple mediums including verbal, written, video, etc.
  • Support YMCA activities and events.  Attendance is often required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Note: This job is performed as an employee of the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and supports the Suncoast YMCA through a formalized organizational agreement.  YMCAs at times may have different visions and require different methods to address communication needs.
