Chief Operating Officer

Seeking a strategic and mission-driven Chief Operating Officer to join the Executive Team of the Countryside YMCA! 
Job Description

The COO will provide leadership, guidance, and direction to the Countryside YMCA. Specific areas of focus include: advancing our mission, cause and values throughout the organization; overseeing sound fiscal operation and performance using key business analytics; developing a strategic facility management plan to overhaul the aging building; collaborating with the community to ensure implementation of the 2025 Strategic Plan; ensuring program excellence; and championing a culture of philanthropy, community engagement and leadership development. The Countryside YMCA is striving to be reflective, relevant and responsive to the communities we serve. The COO will serve on the Executive Leadership Team and work directly with the CEO. The COO would oversee Facilities, Housekeeping, Membership Operations, Aquatics/Gymnastics, and CSC/Fitness/Sports. 

  • Accredited, four year Bachelor's degree and residence or relocation to Warren County service area.  
  • 10-15+ years of broad senior management experience (YMCA experience strongly preferred) within an operation of similar size and scope.
  • Personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Prior experience in the areas of:
    • Facility management and preventative maintenance programs
    • Strategic planning
    • Enterprise management
    • Budget preparation and management
    • Public relations
    • Board and volunteer development
    • Staff development and coaching, conflict management, and issue resolution
    • Program management
  • YMCA Organizational Leader certificate preferred (may be required within two years from date of hire). 
  • Versatility, flexibility, and ability to work within changing priorities as well as the ability to manage priorities and workflow; ability to delegate
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards; natural affinity to detail but with ability to balance perfection with common sense.
  • Ability to work independently, but with strong, inspirational leadership skills to rally the team towards a common goal.
  • Proficient in technology, including: Excel, Word, Explorer, Outlook, DAXKO, PowerPoint, etc.

Essential Functions

Daily Operations:  Assures sound operations through direct management of the team, including coaching and providing overall direction to the staff and volunteers.  Oversees operations to ensure growth of Countryside YMCA through program expansion, staff development, membership, pricing strategies and community collaborations.  Resolves any cross-department issues through listening, collaboration and strategy-focused decisions. Implements practical solutions to complete strategic plan initiatives.

Develops Facility Improvement Plan: The Countryside YMCA is >45 years old and needs continual interventions.  Maintenance, housekeeping and facility upgrades is a key priority that will require direct attention.  Major renovations in the competition pool, the outdoor pool, the main building structural integrity and general wear-and-tare are key priorities.  Further, maintenance and housekeeping require direct supervision and headcount investments.  The COO will have direct leadership of these key opportunity areas.

Financial Objectives:  Assures financial success by taking all necessary actions to assure that department, program, branch and association revenue targets are met, and expenses are controlled. Monitors the achievement of financial goals and performance through accountability and benchmarks balancing long term direction with short term requirements to maximize mission impact and provide long term sustainability.  Collaborates with the CFO and other leaders in identifying, analyzing and resolving financial concerns.

Drives Continual Improvement:  Drives operational growth including program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new program site development, collaborations, etc. Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities, including the identification of potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals. Identifies, establishes, and fosters enterprise collaboration.

Communicates with Depth and Clarity:  Maintains effective communication with board members, executive leadership team, and CEO. Communicates to CEO any suggestions, concerns or incidents that may need follow-up.  Prepares statistical, analytical and narrative reports as needed, including reports to committees, the Board of Directors and the President/CEO.  Has established communication drumbeat with direct reports, next level leaders and all employees (both FT and PT).  Ensures member-facing communications are robust, provide enterprise information and are in line with YMCA values.

Ensures Exceptional Customer RelationsIs able to relate to diverse member population, including the ability to highlight the programs that the YMCA offers as well as the YMCA mission statement.  Is front line leader managing member complaints or concerns.  Is proactive in addressing ongoing issues.  Provides timely response to Board, Committee Members, YMCA members and staff on current events, issues, celebrations. Inspires confidence that every voice is heard and is taken seriously.

Required Certifications

YMCA Organizational Leader Certification preferred.
