Job Description

The Community Outreach Director reports to the VP of Financial Development and will develop and implement community-based outreach programs such as Y on the Fly.  These programs will deliver a “Y without walls” programming experience directly to communities outside of our facilities and will allow us to serve more neighborhoods than ever before. 


1.    Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.

2.    One to two years of experience in program management.

3.    Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to fundraise.

4.    Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

5.    Ability to identify problems and find acceptable solutions.

6.    Experience working with diverse populations.

7.    American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) in CPR/AED and First Aid is required.

8.    Valid driver’s license.

Essential Functions

1.    Develops and implements community outreach programs including Y on the Fly and community health and wellness programs. Delivers high-quality programs and establishes new program activities to meet community needs. Evaluates program effectiveness and responds to customer feedback.

2.    Manages logistics for program initiatives. Drives the program van to sites, sets up, and implements program activities for participants. Orders and distributes meals to participants.

3.    Organizes special events for outreach programs and fundraising campaigns to cultivate donors, prospects, and program participants.

4.    Recruits, hires, trains, develops, and directs program employees and volunteers. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.

5.    Develops and publishes the staff schedule for outreach programs. Maintains appropriate staffing levels and fills in for absences.

6.    Develops, manages, and controls budgets related to the position. Orders and distributes supplies and equipment as per budget. Exercises necessary controls to ensure operations are carried out and a balanced fiscal operation exists.

7.    Identifies grant opportunities and new funding sources. Provides information to support grant writing efforts. Compiles and submits documentation required for grants and reimbursement programs.

8.    Maintains rules, regulations, and standards as required by YMCA Buffalo Niagara and governing agencies such as the Summer Food Service Program.

9.    Develops and maintains positive relationships with city officials, funders, and related agencies.

10.  Delivers outstanding service to participants. Responds to all inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.

11.  Provides a safe and clean environment and ensures the safety of staff and participants. Follows and enforces department protocol to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces and ensures PPE compliance.

12.  Serves as a member of YMCA management and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.

13.  Carries out other duties as assigned.
