How you will contribute to our Purpose:

The Youth and Family Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of all youth & family programs and services as well as Child Watch programs at the Southwest YMCA Center. You will supervise Youth & Family and Child Watch Team Members to ensure appropriate leadership and support of all Youth Activities at the center. You serve as the Sports liaison for Youth SportsYou help build successful year-long teen programs that help teens realize their full potential while playing a supportive role in the Youth and Government program.  A significant emphasis should be given to planning programs that meet community needs and enterprise objectives. 

You will also support the enterprise’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and the core character values of the YMCA. Reporting directly to the Associate Center Executive (ACE), you will partner closely with other senior leaders throughout the enterprise to achieve outcomes.

Salary: $51,000- $55,000 depending on experience

  • Education - Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in recreation, youth programming, non-profit management, or related field preferred. Or a combination of education, experience, and measurable performance which demonstrates the capability to perform the duties of this position.
  • Experience – 3-4 years of experience in a supervisory position. Experience with creating, implementing, and evaluating Youth and Family Programming.
Essential Functions

The member relations aspect of this position requires that relationship building be always a top priority, attending to the needs and requests of members, program participants, volunteers, and all people associated with the YMCA in a courteous and friendly manner.

Specific Duties & Job Responsibilities

Performance Achievement & Results (20%)

  • Hold the team accountable for achieving high levels to meet strategic goals and objectives.
  • Model inclusive leadership behaviors and embraces all dimensions of diversity – building strong teams that apply their diverse skills and perspectives to our mission.
  • Responsible for hiring, coaching, and managing all direct reports and ensuring alignment with association people practices for all positions within their organizational structure.
  • Conduct Quarterly Check-ins and the Annual Check-In with direct reports to ensure progress with OKRs, provide ongoing coaching and feedback, and discuss development opportunities.
  • Implement a goal-based leadership approach (OKR methodology) and ensure the development department is actively working towards supporting organizational level objectives and key results.
  • Lead monthly development & training meetings for Team Members
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws
  • Audit Team Members to ensure performance & member experience expectations are being met
  • Conduct annual performance appraisals at least once a year, as well as Team Members' appreciation and recognition
  • Develop performance standards with full-time direct Team Member's reports that include a training plan and other development opportunities


Program Operations & Management (70%)

  • Program Leadership
    • Create a positive and motivational environment for all Team Members
    • Serve as a Cause Driven Leader on Duty and/or Director on Duty according to branch schedule, and complete CDL report.
    • Ensure program quality is of the highest regard for all department programs
    • Use data-based decision-making for program decisions.
    • Representative to Impact Team for Y&F/Child Watch.
    • Respond to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner utilizing written and verbal communication, including phone and face-to-face.
    • Ability to work a flexible work schedule always to ensure regular exposure to team members and members throughout the week, including early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends.
    • Address complaints and use conflict resolution techniques to solve Team Members' problems.


  • Program & Administrative Support
    • Guide, direct, and oversee current Youth and Family programs and Initiatives, Child Watch, and the creation of new programs.
    • Establish operating standards and program objectives to guarantee the quality of existing programs, ensure participant satisfaction and attract new members and program participants.
    • Create an on-going evaluation process to measure perceived program quality.
    • Assist with coordination and recruitment of Sports programs and act as Sports contact for the center.
    • Assist with and lead targeted teen programs in conjunction with the Youth & Government/ Teen Director to ensure year-long programming for teens and middle school students.
    • Ensure program information is complete and up to date in the member services system (Daxko), website, and mobile app at all times.
    • Communicate all youth development-related programming and events via social media, online, and through all intra-branch and inter-branch methods available.
    • Organize and schedule youth development program registrations.
    • Compiles monthly program statistics to monitor participation and impact
    • Monitor and update all required Team Members' certifications, scheduling, and facility needs. 
  • Fiscal Management
    • Develop, implement, and monitor the annual Youth & Family/Child Watch budget.
    • Track, monitor, and adjust resources to meet financial goals.
    • Review and certify the accuracy of department payroll.
    • Track and monitor youth program registration fees and sessions scheduled. 
  • Facilities & Risk Management
    • Manage inventory and order supplies for the center.
    • Supervise occupancy Team Members.
    • Conduct monthly risk-management audits and facility inspections.
    • Develop and implement an ongoing preventative maintenance program for all areas of programming responsibility.
    • Works with Associate Center Executive and other Program Directors to lead risk management drills for all Team Members and recommend procedural changes to ensure the safety of all Team Members, members, guests, and participants.

Advancement, Marketing & Communications (5%)

  • In conjunction with other exempt Team Members, promote and incorporate the YMCA's three areas of focus and the Y’s Cause and Culture.
  • Lead marketing efforts for all youth development programs.
  • Lead Department with Annual Campaign effort for Team Members and members.
  • Communicate Annual Campaign needs through Y stories and testimonials.
  • Serve as an exempt Team Members member to the YMCA of Austin, performing those duties as assigned by the Associate Center Executive.
  • Actively and enthusiastically support the branch and enterprise goals and directions through effective completion of tasks and verbal display to peers, Team Members, members, and guests
  • Recruit, train, develop, support, and directly supervise volunteers.
  • Ensure Team Members are well informed and connected to the larger branch and the strategic plan for the enterprise.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • Complete all other duties as assigned by the center and leadership.
  • Manage projects and coordinate events in conjunction with other Team Members and volunteers to achieve long and short-range goals of the enterprise.
