   The Health and Wellness Director will be responsible for the daily operations of all wellness programs.
Job Description

The Health and Wellness Director will be responsible for the daily operations of all wellness programs including traditional YMCA Signature Programs, management of the Wellness Center Floor, Personal Training Program, Small Group Fitness Programs, and Group Exercise Classes.   

Responsibilities also include program development, budget development and management, new member onboarding, supervision and development of staff and volunteers, member support, engagement and retention, and building community partnerships/engagement.   Health and wellness programs will include:  Adult Fitness, Youth/Teen Fitness, Group Exercise, Corporate Wellness, Special Events, Specialty Classes and Programs.  The Director will also ensure the continued development of a Disease Prevention Program and will provide guidance on the continued development of the Exeter Area YMCA Corporate Wellness Program.   


  • Five or more years of program management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • BS Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology or related study.
  • Current nationally recognized Personal Trainer certification, OR CSCS, OR nationally recognized Group Exercise Certification, OR the willingness to update certification within 2 months in the case of a lapsing national certification. 
  • 2-3 years of related experience in supervising and training staff and coordinating schedules.  
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Previous customer service, sales or related experience.
  • Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments.
  • Prior experience scheduling employee shifts. 
  • Experience with database software packages including Daxko or related relational database platforms. 
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow multi-step instructions required.
  • Multiyear experience in creative wellness program design for those school aged throughout the lifespan.
  • Multi-year experience in direct wellness service and the willingness to continue some hours of direct service as part of the role.  For example: group exercise class instruction, one on one or group personal training OR direct service nutrition and dietetics.
  • Ability to multi-task, hit deadlines and work efficiently both individually and as a team and with those of varying personality types and management styles in a compact work environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operation, including staff supervision and development, successful management practices, quality program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility and property management and sound financial practices.

  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of YMCA and the respective roles of volunteerism and staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
Essential Functions
  • Prepare and monitor annual budget for areas of responsibility making adjustments as needed for success.  Know and follow the YMCA established business procedures.
  • Hire, train and supervise staff for all areas of responsibility ensure quality programming is being delivered to their participants consistent with the YMCA philosophy and mission.  Cultivate the professional development of the staff for growth and success.
  • Compile payroll bi-weekly and monitors daily hours for health and wellness staff.
  • Evaluate staff quarterly, identifying areas for improvement and recognizing successes since the last review.
  • Conduct staff meetings and trainings that foster growth in instructors and meets their expectations.
  • Implement and supervise safety and emergency procedures as they relate to both personnel and members.
  • Cooperate with other Southern District YMCA staff in the planning, promotion and implementation of special events; and maintain positive working relationships with peers on special projects.
  • May oversee Membership Department or work closely alongside Membership personnel.
  • Promote, staff, supervise, and market programs of the YMCA to various groups in the community.
  • Assemble a group exercise class schedules that is current with trends and community/member needs utilizing three studios. 
  • Coordinates use of facilities for program activities and events.
  • Regularly evaluate programs by soliciting response from members and staff.
  • Responsible for program enrollment, retention, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Oversee the Wellness Center, Fitness Classes, Corporate Wellness and Youth and Adult Fitness Programs. Create and implement youth exercise programs.
  • Monitor member usage and requests for any fitness equipment and make recommendations for new equipment purchase.
  • Purchase all equipment necessary as budgeted and approved for the success of the YMCA and department.  Create maintenance plan and long-term strategy for capital improvements.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of personalized exercise programs appropriate to individual fitness levels and needs. 
  • Develop and execute new member fitness orientation/assessment program.
  • Promote membership and fitness opportunities available in the YMCA.
  • Serve as Director on Duty/Manager on Duty as assigned.
  • Attend all meetings required of full time staff.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.

Required Certifications
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
  • Other relevant YMCA Trainings for position, including Redwoods Risk Management within 30 days and Wellness specific within first 6 months.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required.
  • Other certifications necessary for related field.
  • Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
