Job Description

Provides direction and leadership abilities for YMCA finance and business operations. Reports directly to the President and CEO and supervises the YMCA’s accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of its financial reports. Ensures a system of strong internal controls and maintains fiscal soundness. Manages the annual external audit, the 990-tax return, and the preparation of information for outside funders and board meeting presentations. Provides leadership for other functions, such as human resources and information technology services. Opportunity to grow into a CFO role within this expanding YMCA Association.


1.         Bachelor’s degree in business, finance or equivalent; MBA, CPA or CMA may be preferred.

2.         Eight or more years of substantive experience in accounting and financial management.

3.         Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required including budget development, financial reporting, cash management, depreciation schedules, business taxes, banking, and debt financing instruments.

4.         Knowledge of computer systems, including experience with systems selection, new system implementation and project management. Must have advanced EXCEL skill and superior analytical skills with attention to detail. Knowledge of Daxko membership management software a plus but not required.

5.         Experience with investment management and asset allocation preferred.

6.         Must be a team player with good organization and communication skills. Must possess excellent people skills to lead a team and regularly interact with Board of Directors and Finance Committee members.

7.         Previous experience with nonprofit organizations, preferred. Experience working with endowments, investment management, and asset allocation also preferred.

Essential Functions

1.         Manages all functions of accounting and business operations, ensuring that legal and audit requirements are met and best practices with maximum efficiency are obtained.

2.         Hires, trains, and oversees assigned staff, providing direct supervision. Arranges back-up for staff as needed.

3.         Prepares or supervises the preparation of outside reports and filings. Manages the annual independent audit, the preparation of financial statements, and the IRS 990 tax form. Prepares or oversees the preparation of required audit schedules; maintains records; acts as liaison with audit team and YMCA Finance Committee.

4.         Oversees and provides leadership to the annual budget process, including issuing guidelines and procedures, training staff, auditing budgets, overseeing required data input, and preparing reports.

5.         Implements appropriate systems and internal controls to adequately safeguard the YMCAs financial resources and to provide a solid basis for accurately reporting financial data.

6.         Develops performance indicators and measurement system for tracking strategic plan objectives. Evaluates current business models and leads efforts to modify or redesign business models where necessary. Analyzes and interprets financial data and recommend changes to improve systems and financial performance while giving guidance to executive and operating staff. Works closely with operations and program staff on issues that affect financial outcomes.  

7.         Oversees the month-end and year-end closings and the preparation of statements and reports, including cash flow projection process and reporting

8.         May implement, manage, and oversee personnel and payroll administration including maintaining records and related systems.

9.         Manages, maintains and/or monitors all banking and financing relationships.

10.     Collects, maintains data, and provides reports for government contracts and grants. Ensures compliance with all requirements of local, state, and federal grants including but not limited to, Yellow Book and Single audit requirements

11.     Represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required.

12.     Performs other duties as assigned.
