Job Description

The mission of the Bangor Region YMCA is to be a community leader in helping young swimmers achieve their goals in and outside of the pool.  The YMCA is committed to a high-quality Swim Team Program that seeks to impact children and families throughout the Greater Bangor Region in positive and powerful ways. The Head Coach will oversee the Bangor Region YMCA Barracuda Swim Team.

In this position, the coach provides not just swimming technique and competitive skills but also inspires, motivates, and heightens the confidence and self-esteem of our children. The Head Coach teaches team building skills, and the importance of being a part of a community. The Head Coach instills the core values of our Y which are Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Qualifications
  1. Loves to work with children and teens, is patient, has diverse teaching skills, and possesses necessary traits to be a mentor to our children and teens.
  2. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with prior competitive swimming experience.
  3. Must be proficient in swimming and safety skills. Must have the ability to motivate and educate participants.
  4. Must be capable of identifying and managing dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers.
  5. Must obtain CPR/First Aid/AED within 90 days of hire.Trainings to be completed before start of duties include Child Abuse Prevention, Blood Borne Pathogens, Workplace Violence, Sexual Harassment, Active Shooter, and Elder Abuse.
  6. Must be willing to obtain Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches, YMCA Principles of Swimming and Diving, Foundations of Coaching 101/201, and any other training necessary.
Essential Functions
  1. Design and implement swim instruction and workout curriculums for all developmental groups as instructed by supervisor.
  2. Provide feedback to participants to facilitate improvement for all participants.
  3. Enforce Aquatic rules and policies by maintaining constant surveillance of swim team participants.
  4.  Record and maintain attendance records that pertain to the swim team.
  5. Attend swim meets, parent meetings, and staff meetings as needed
  6. Build effective, authentic relationships with participants and / or parents; help them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourage program involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  7. Model relationship–building skills and the YMCA core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring in all interactions.
  8. Communicate member concerns, community inquiries and complaints to supervisor in a timely manner.
  9. Positively represent the YMCA through professional conduct and appearance.
  10. Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete any incident/accident reports as needed.
  11. Ensure all swim team participants follow the Bangor Region YMCA Barracuda Swim Team’s Code of Conduct.
  12. Immediately notify supervisor of any broken equipment or unsafe aspects of the pool.
  13. Set up facility or equipment, store equipment, and secure facility upon completion of program.
  14. Provide exceptional customer to contribute to positive experiences for all Y members and guests.
  15. Other duties as assigned.
