Membership/Aquatics Director

Provides leadership and guidance to ensure the achievement of goals and objectives of the Membership & Aquatics Department.
Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the CEO, and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Membership/Aquatics Director intentionally fosters a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined. Is responsible for the development, implementation and supervision of all membership and aquatic programs, activities, facilities and staff.  This position will also have the responsibility for supporting Risk Management for the facility.  

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Willing to learn about the YMCA of the USA standards and guidelines for membership and aquatics-related programs.
  • Must have prior experience as a lifeguard and aquatic instructor, as well as strong supervisory skills.
  • Certifications in the following areas or willingness to obtain: Lifeguard trainer, Lifeguard, CPR for Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid, CPR, First Aid Instructor, Lifeguard Manager Certification or equivalent. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and use of computers
Essential Functions
  • Interpret, communicate, and promote Y mission, goals, and objectives to department employees, volunteer leaders, members, and the community.
  • Support branch/department initiatives related to membership retention and Annual Giving goals.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with members and staff.



  • Implement membership strategies that support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members.  Creates a member-focused culture and model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  • Create and maintain a Member Service desk and aquatics facility that is welcoming, high energy with a mission of delivering excellent customer service.  Ensures proper implementation of front desk procedures. Reviews and updates desk procedures and communicate changes to staff.
  • Manage all functions of the Aquatics Department including aquatic safety, hazardous materials, pool mechanics, swim lessons, lifeguarding, and swim team and any additional specialty classes
  • Assist in monitoring aquatic operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct lifeguard, swim lesson instructor and safety certification trainings.
  • Responsible for safety drills/audits, monthly documented staff meetings/development and trainings.
  • Perform audits of pool systems and equipment
  • Develop and implement annual membership and aquatics growth and retention goals and objectives that include monthly and weekly action plans. Responsible for monitoring daily, weekly, and monthly sales and retention reports and providing analysis of reports.
  • Promotes membership and aquatics program enrollment in interactions with existing and potential members. Ensures program registration is accurate prior to registration dates, including logistics to support phone, walk-in, and web registration. Assists with marketing efforts to maximize enrollment.
  • Organizes membership and aquatics events at the YMCA and represents the YMCA at community events to promote the YMCA.
  • Be visible to staff and members.
