Job Description

Under the guidance of the Vice President of Community Initiatives, the Executive Director of the Metro Youth Y branch oversees the operation of the branch, specific tasks, goals and objectives including participants, marketing, programs, spaces, volunteer and staff development, financial development, designated community relations and collaborations with designated community agencies. As a vital part of the branch leadership team, the Executive Director is also accountable for branch financial, budgets, and annual campaign goals.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree is required. Master’s Degree preferred. Comparable degree areas include education, behavioral, management and mental health.
  • YMCA Multi-Team Leader certification preferred.
  • Six or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Ability to direct total operations through volunteer development, supervision of staff, development and monitoring of branch budget, marketing and public relations, and program development.
  • Experience in management and development of volunteer involvement; ability to recruit top community leaders.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others.
  • Ability to secure and leverage funding support for sustainability and growth of branch-specific programs.
  • Grant writing and contract experience preferred.
  • Four years or more experience in large contracts and grant procurement, preferably six figures.
  • At least four years of experience in overseeing multiple program site and teams simultaneously.
  • Significant relationships with nonprofit leaders, funders and community organizations in Wayne County, Detroit and the metropolitan area.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of community-focused programs for youth, middle and high school - ages 12-21, preferred.
Essential Functions
  • Maintains diverse advisory boards that actively support the Y’s goals and strategic plans. Recruits, selects, and develops diverse volunteers for the branch board. Clarifies and reinforces the division of roles and responsibilities between corporate boards, management or advisory boards, staff, and general volunteers.
  • Builds bridges within the community so that all segments of society have access to the Y.
  • Effectively communicates community benefit and the Y’s impact for all stakeholders (e.g., staff, volunteers, participants, organizations, businesses, and governmental entities).
  • Manages the budget and forecasting process so that resources are devoted to top priorities and strategic objectives. Ensures operating budgets meet or exceed targets.
  • Develops and directs high-quality community engagement strategies and programs that support branch and association goals and strategies. Establishes plans for the expansion of programs and services, in harmony with overall YMCA objectives and the leadership team.
  • Creates and supports the financial development activities of the branch and builds a culture of  philanthropy
  • Directs branch activities to reflect the Association’s strategic plan and develops the annual operating plan of the branch.
  • Oversees the hiring, training, development and supervision of staff.
  • Daily management of direct service staff, activities and tasks of the branch to ensure efficiency, quality and compliance of branch programs components.
  • Fosters a climate of innovation to develop participant-focused programs that support the Y mission, goals, and strategies.
  • Ensures the health and safety of program spaces, grounds, and equipment.
  • Ensures the branch maintains Association standards.
  • Develops and oversees relevant programming in adherence to the goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Oversees the day-to-day implementation of programs for the branch
  • Oversees multiple programs, locations and teams.
