Job Description

The Executive Director of Membership Experience will provide leadership for the successful day-to-day operations of all membership services and operations for the YMCA of Muncie.  These areas include aquatics, tennis, community engagement, Christian emphasis, fitness and wellness. In addition, the person in this position will develop and engage in building relationships that will have a positive long-term impact for the YMCA.  An understanding of the YMCA as a mission-driven/charitable organization is a must.


Education and Certifications 

  • A 4-year college degree or applicable YMCA experience is required; 4-year degree strongly preferred. 
  • Online New Employee Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, and Blood Borne Pathogens within 30 days of employment.  Child Abuse Prevention and Blood Borne Pathogens to be refreshed every 12 months. 
  • CPR/AED, First Aid within 60 days of hire and kept current. 


  •  5-8 years minimum of experience demonstrating the ability to recruit, train, motivate and supervise staff and volunteers, as well as the ability to work with volunteer committees.
  • Proven track record in fundraising along with community and partner development.
  • Sound budget development, fiscal and facility management background required.  
  • Solid experience in program planning and membership development required.  
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license, insurable driver’s record according to the YMCA’s insurance carriers, and have reliable transportation to travel for business meetings, training events, YMCA site visits, vendors and suppliers, etc.
  • Computer skills needed, particularly with Microsoft Office and email applications, along with ability to learn the internal YMCA software.  
Essential Functions
  • Articulates a clear vision for the mission and goals of the YMCA, which inspires and engages internal constituents and the external community.
  • Champions and integrates character development and the four core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility in all aspects of membership operations. 
  • Develops, implements and manages the financial plan of membership experience for the association. Ensures income meets or exceeds budgeted levels and controls expenses within budgeted guidelines.
  • Develops, directs and monitors membership volunteers and staff, including four direct reports.
  • Works to provide opportunities and resources to meet staff training and development needs.
  • Directs membership experience marketing and communication efforts.
  • Upholds guidelines as outlined in the Association Employee Handbook.
  • Evaluates and develops programs and services and recommends changes based on compatibility with the goals, community need, sustainability and the strategic plan of the Association.
  • Prepares and maintains statistical, analytical and narrative reports and records related to membership programs, financial development and operations as required.
  • Ensures the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds and equipment including all off-site locations.
  • Joins and is an active member in a service club, chamber of commerce, youth council or other community organizations to represent the YMCA. Develops community partnerships.
  • Seeks out and develops funding opportunities including, but not limited to grants, endowment and partnership opportunities to support the mission of the YMCA.
  • Recruits and develops the appropriate volunteer structure.
  • Ensures the emergency procedures for membership services and operations are in place and that all staff knows and can respond to the appropriate procedures.
