POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Aquatic Coordinator at the Yakima YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for guard staff. The Aquatics Coordinator is the lead organizer of private lessons. The Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for the oversight of birthday party scheduling, payment and assigning hosts. The Aquatics Coordinator acts as the lead coach for the Yakima YMCA Swim Team. The Aquatics Coordinator will run seasonal Lifeguarding courses to support the Yakima YMCA’s need to staff two facilities. The Aquatics Coordinator will guard up to 10 hours a week on the pool deck at either facility while also provide rotational breaks to on-duty lifeguards. Other responsibilities will include assisting the Aquatics Director in staff training and assigned administrative duties.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

 Must have competitive swimming experience, and have an understanding of how children learn and ability to communicate appropriately. Knowledge of USA Swimming Organization preferred.

 Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification.

 Ability to maintain required certification; Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

 Must possess excellent customer service skills. Positively interact with the general public.

 Ability to work independently and possess high energy enthusiasm and motivational skills.

 A minimum of 2-3 years of lifeguarding experience, preferred.

 Must possess excellent communication skills. Show the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with multiple groups of people including patrons, guards and supervisors.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Acts as lead coach for Yakima YMCA Swim Team including the following:

o Scheduling of tryouts for swim team

o Act as parent liaison to Yakima YMCA

o Develop appropriate daily and seasonal swim plans for each swim group

o Create a competition schedule for team

o Provide daily coaching and appropriate skill feedback to all swimmers

o Responsible for registration and monitor monthly payment report to match with those who are swimming

 Responsible for the organization, scheduling, and signups of private swim lessons including scheduling of instructors and monitoring payments

 Provides reserved birthday parties with hosts name, facility rules and expectations, distributes and accepts waivers one week in advance

 Communicates any and all daily schedule changes with Aquatics Director

 Completes administrative assignments as assigned by the Aquatics Director

 While on duty as a lifeguard, provides continuous, uninterrupted scanning of pool and aquatic area.

Reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergencies immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required

 Follows and ensures Minimum Standards of Safety for Aquatic Activities 7.301. Understands and consistently enforces safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area

 Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code

 Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed

 Plays an active role in continuing to identify ways to improve safety standards

 Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff

 Continuously monitors aquatic area for hazardous or unsafe conditions. Immediately reports all hazardous or unsafe conditions to management and takes appropriate action

 Uses problem-solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury

 Successfully completes and pass periodic aquatic safety assessments

 Other duties as assigned by Department Director and/or Administration
