Located in southeast Michigan on 1,200 acres surrounding Stony Lake, our 15 unique ecosystems provide a natural learning environment for campers, students, teachers and families year round.
Job Description

To lend support to the entire Summer Camp staff and structure.  Responsible for the safe operations and instruction of all waterfront activities in accordance with camp and state regulations.



Must be at least 18 years of age and have had worked in an aquatic department or resident camp setting.  Must have experience or teaching knowledge of swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding.  Must have a sincere desire to work with children.  Must be certified Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid by the time summer camp begins.   

Essential Functions


·      Interpret, enforce and maintain the safety standards and regulations of the Aquatic Department.

·      Supervise general counseling staff during general swim activities.

·      Responsible for care and upkeep of all waterfront equipment.

·      Instruct classes and lead waterfront activities (ie free swims, canoeing/kayaking, paddle boarding, driving rescue boat) during designated periods.

·      Responsible for participating in water safety drills and lost camper drills on the waterfront.

·      Responsible for and implementation of the Buddy System.

·      Meet as required with Aquatic Director and other aquatic staff to discuss schedule, program   safety trainings, and maintenance needs.

·      Follow all camp policies, rules, and regulations.

·      Provide support and be a role model to all staff and campers.

·      Lives in a cabin with campers and when not performing duties at the waterfront will assist with camper supervision/guidance in group and camp activities.

·      Participate in evening programs and activities.

·      Any other duties assigned that enhance any/all camp programs and the    experiences of all campers and participants at YMCA Storer Camps.

The employee frequently is required to sit and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
