Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Youth Development Director provides hands-on leadership for the development and operations of various programs, such as play center, teen leadership, day camp, membership & community events and pre-school programming.  They will design practices, processes, and procedures for strong program and project management.  They must understand their role in helping build relationships and a small community atmosphere among our members.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in child development, recreation, elementary education or related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, plus ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of kids and adults from all socio- and economic segments of the community. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, problem solve and possess effective time management skills. 
  • Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain relationships with staff, YMCA members, volunteers and community stakeholders
  • Exemplify YMCA values (caring, honest, respect & responsibility), leadership qualities and a professional image.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification required within 1 year.
  • 2-3 years in youth development work, program development and staff supervision
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, quick learner of internet applications and computer platforms
  • Minimum age of 21
  • Pass the State of Georgia criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen and MVR.
  • Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include: completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; Working with Program Volunteers; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens. 
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications.
Essential Functions
  • Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. Onboards and develops them for success. Organizes people and activities for efficiencies and effectiveness.  Directly supervises all aspects of the play center, camp and other assigned program staff.
  • This position must perform duties in accordance with the policies, goals, mission, values and objectives established by the Metropolitan Atlanta YMCA, Branch Strategic Plan, Safety Protocols Including COVID, and Member Services Guidelines and Non-Negotiables. Emphasis will be placed on member service, program knowledge, member/staff safety, and communication with members and staff.
  • Implements the YMCA safety protocols both related to COVID and branch operations.
  • Implement wellness checks and provide a leadership role in ensuring member/staff adherence to the safety protocols, with a commitment to positive member and staff safety.
  • Reviews and evaluates staff performance.  Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Develops, implements and manages operating plans to promote program growth, program impact and safety for the YMCA.  
  • Measures progress against strategic goals and ensures continuous improvement.
  • Assures compliance with state and local regulations.  Ensures that program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
  • Develops and controls department budgets related to the position so that resources are developed to top priorities and strategic objectives.  Provides daily oversight as to expenditures and revenue collection. 
  • Uses data to analyze financial trends and forecast future financial progress for the branch.
  • Manages registrations, rosters, record keeping, etc. 
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information, may organize and schedule program registrations.  May review and process program scholarship applications.
  • Establishes new activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. 
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations and fellow YMCA branches.
  • Foster a climate of innovation.  
  • Collaborate with the Association key departments to lead, coordinate and support implementation of key initiatives related to marketing, social media and communications, human resources and financial development.  
  • Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Conduct pilots for new programs; develop plans and manage best practices through engagement of the staff team.  
  • Leads assigned aspects of the fund-raising campaign
  • Participates in meetings, cabinets and work groups as assigned.
