YMCA Camp Kirkwood is located just outside of Wilmington, NC on 195 acres of pristine woodlands and features a 10-acre lake. In December of 2009, the YMCA of Southeastern NC (formerly known as the Wilmington Family YMCA) formed a partnership with the Friends of Camp Kirkwood to take over the camp's operation in an effort to revitalize its mission of serving youth. The result of this partnership is that the YMCA and Friends of Camp Kirkwood have been successful in raising funds to expand camp offerings by adding elements including: low ropes course, high ropes course & zip line, a prayer labyrinth, power pole and paddleboards, and much more.
Job Description

The Executive Director oversees the total operation of Camp Kirkwood including summer camp, conferences/retreats, family programming, environmental education programs, camper experience, and a team of both year-round and seasonal staff to ensure camp remains a best-in-class camping facility dedicated to serving youth and families for generations to come. In addition, the position is responsible for building a robust volunteer board and growing the fundraising initiatives (both Annual Campaign and Capital Campaigns) for Camp Kirkwood.

Qualifications

•Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.

•YMCA Team Leader or Multi-Team Leader certification preferred.

•One to two years related outdoor resident camp leadership experience preferred.

•Aquatics management experience and current Lifeguard certification expected, Lifeguard Trainer Certification preferred. Certified Pool Operator and High ropes level 2 certification preferred. 

•Minimum age of 21.

•Within 60 days of hire, completion of Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, CPR/First Aid, and Anti-Harassment training.

•Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

 

Essential Functions

1.Leads with equity and inclusion, ensuring all members and participants feel welcome and are treated with dignity and respect. Builds a staff and volunteer team that reflects the diversity of the local area. 

2.Works along-side leadership and the board volunteer team to co-create a strategic vision for the long-term sustainability of Camp Kirkwood.

3.Creates a strategic vision for the growth of Camp; inspires staff, board, and the community to engage in the vision and develops an annual operating plan to accomplish the vision of growth.

4.Develops camper recruitment/retention strategies to grow summer camp enrollment.

5.Creates, launches, and sustains an engaging alumni program.

6.Develops and directs high-quality programs and services for children, families, and school/conference groups. 

7.Ensures campers and guests receive a high-quality, positive camp experience.

8.Coordinates the building and development of the Camp Volunteer Board and committees. Keeps Board connected to broader Association-wide volunteer engagement initiatives.

9.Leads a robust Annual Campaign to ensure fundraising goals are met and supports Capital Campaign efforts designed to sustain Camp Kirkwood. 

10.Ensures Camp’s active participation in the Association’s Youth Development Continuum of Care through effective communication and coordination with all YMCA programs, centers and Executives.

11.Deepens Camp’s and the YMCA’s presence and impact in Pender and New Hanover County communities through building collaborative relationships with other [community] organizations, businesses, and governmental entities.

12.Develops a diverse and enthusiastic camp staff team through hiring, training, supervision, and professional development. 

13.Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate and retain quality staff.

14.Develops, manages, and monitors the camp operating budget and meets or exceeds budget targets.

15.Ensures the safety and preservation of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.

16.Collaborates with the marketing team to refine and implement an aggressive camp marketing and communication strategy.

17.Serves as a member of YMCA senior staff team and supports the overall objectives of the YMCA.

18.Follows all YMCA policies and safety and emergency procedures and processes.

19.Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

20.Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.

21.Meet timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance.
